Maritime Ties Purchase On Senior Day

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team honored seniors Annaliese Etienne (Garden City, NY) and Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) prior to Friday afternoon's matchup with Purchase.  The Privateers (5-6-1, 1-5-1 Skyline) then took an early 1-0 lead before the Panthers (3-10-2, 1-5-1 Skyline) scored in the 56th minute to earn a 1-1 draw at Reinhart Field.

After Purchase dominated possession for the first few minutes, Maritime broke through in the 18th minute. Sara Williams (Oceanside, NY) sent a long ball into the box in the direction of Eva Garcia (Rockville Centre, NY).  Goalkeeper Jill Creegan came out to play Garcia's shot, but Hannah Crown (Athens, NY) was able to get free behind her and put it in.  Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) did her part to preserve the 1-0 advantage, tallying eight first-half saves.

In the second half, it was the Privateers who applied the early pressure, as Purchase goalkeeper Carolyn Hough (who entered after the Maritime goal) recorded six saves in the first 15 minutes of the period.  The Panthers struck for an equalizer in the 58th minute when Sophia Franklin found Rebecca Quick on the left side, and she chipped it over Devon Etienne's head to level the score at 1-1.

Quick nearly gave Purchase the lead in the 84th minute, but her shot hit the post.  The rebound went right to Franklin.  Devon Etienne was able to make the stop and keep the game tied, however.  The Privateers had a late chance of their own when Madeline Powers (Atlantic Beach, NY) saw her 89th-minute attempt blocked.  Devon Etienne (4-6-1) then notched one last save, her 13th of the game, in the final minute and the contest finished in a draw.  Hough (3-7-2) notched 13 saves in 72 minutes for the Panthers, as each team attempted 25 shots and was credited with 14 shots on goal.

Crown's goal was her first of the season.  Garcia registered her fourth assist of the year, while Williams picked up her first assist.  Quick, meanwhile, scored her team-leading sixth goal for Purchase.

Maritime continues its three-game homestand on Tuesday, when Medgar Evers (0-3-0) visits Reinhart Field for a 5 p.m. matchup.  It will be the Privateers' final non-conference contest of the season.
