Privateers Edged By St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – On Thursday night, the Maritime College volleyball team took on St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a Skyline Conference match.  The Privateers (4-15, 1-3 Skyline) were unable to come away with the victory, however, as the Bears (9-4, 3-0 Skyline) notched a 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 win at the Hill Center.

Maritime built a 5-4 lead in the first set before St. Joseph's Brooklyn used a 12-2 run to open up a 16-7 advantage.  After the Privateers got back within 17-11, the Bears rallied for five of the next points to bring the margin back to 10 points, 22-12.  Maritime again responded, trimming its deficit to 24-20, but St. Joseph's Brooklyn took the next point to claim the set, 25-20.

The Bears then scored the first seven points of the second set.  The Privateers claimed the next four, but St. Joseph's Brooklyn countered with a 7-3 spurt to make it 14-7.  The Bears won the set by a 25-15 count to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, it was Maritime that jumped out to the early lead.  However, after a Mikaela Thiel (Fort Morgan, CO) service ace gave the Privateers a 7-3 cushion, St. Joseph's Brooklyn scored 18 of the next 22 points.  Maritime came storming back, though, going on an 11-3 spurt to get within 24-22.  A kill by Martina Urgo on the next point clinched the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0, for the Bears.

Soraya Hall (Valrico, FL) finished with a team-high 10 kills, and she added eight digs.  Thiel had nine digs and 11 assists, while Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) recorded five kills, eight digs and 11 assists.  Grace Devaney (Lynbrook, NY), meanwhile, served three aces to go along with eight digs.  As a team, the Privateers outdug the Bears 48-46.

For St. Joseph's Brooklyn, Taylor Knight led the way with 13 kills.  She also tallied 10 digs and three aces.  Urgo contributed seven kills, six digs and four aces, and Rachel Meltsin distributed 26 assists to go along with four aces.  Jenna Diaz paced the Bears with 11 digs while adding four aces.  St. Joseph's Brooklyn finished with 16 aces as a team.

After playing six out of seven away from home, the Privateers' next three matches will be at Riesenberg Gymnasium.  Maritime starts the stretch with a matchup against defending Skyline champion Manhattanville (10-8, 4-0 Skyline) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
