NEW YORK – The Maritime College volleyball team began a three-match road trip at John Jay on Friday night. Playing away from Riesenberg Gymnasium for the first time this season, the Privateers (1-1) dropped a 25-13, 25-12, 25-12 decision to the Bloodhounds (2-1) at the Doghouse.
After Maritime scored the first point of the match, John Jay responded with 13 of the next 15 points to open up a 13-3 lead. The Privateers used a 6-1 run to pull within 14-9 before the Bloodhounds rallied to push the margin back to 21-11. John Jay took the opening set by a 25-13 count.
In the second set, the Bloodhounds raced out to an early 6-2 advantage. After a
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) kill brought Maritime within 8-5, John Jay countered with an 11-4 run to regain a 10-point lead, 19-9. The Privateers won three of the next four points, but the Bloodhounds responded with five in a row to close out the set, 25-12, and go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Maritime got a kill from
Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) to start the third set before John Jay rattled off seven straight points. The Privateers used a 6-2 run to pull back within two at 9-7, but the Bloodhounds claimed 11 of the next 12 points to extend their cushion to 20-8. John Jay finished off the 3-0 sweep by earning a 25-12 third-set win.
Mele
paced the Privateers with four kills and nine digs. Pavarini
also had four kills to go along with seven digs and five assists, while
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) finished with five assists and five digs.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) added four digs for Maritime.
Haley Waugaman posted a match-high six kills on .556 hitting for the Bloodhounds. Faith Harer tallied five kills, nine digs and three service aces, and Reilly Catan slammed five kills of her own. Meghan Smith just missed a double-double with 15 assists and eight digs, while Taylor Hunt and Kristin Gretener served four aces apiece. As a team, John Jay hit .111 (30 kills, 20 errors, 90 attempts) and combined for 16 aces.
On Sunday, the Privateers begin Skyline Conference play with a 3 p.m. contest against Yeshiva (0-2, 0-1 Skyline). The match will take place at Baruch College's ARC Arena.
