THROGGS NECK, NY – For the first time since 2019, the Maritime College women's soccer team is 2-0-0 to start the season.
Kiera Ford's (Montgomery, NY) 18
th-minute tally proved to be the difference, as the Privateers earned a 1-0 victory over Saint Elizabeth (2-1-0) at Reinhart Field on Thursday night.
Ford's fourth goal of the year came on Maritime's first shot attempt of the game. She got free inside the box, took a pass from
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY), and booted a half-volley past the Saint Elizabeth goalkeeper. The Privateers fired off four shots in the final minute of the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net, and score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Maritime nearly doubled its lead in the 51
st minute. Morrill's free kick from 25 yards out hit off the crossbar and the rebound went directly to
Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY). Her attempt went wide, though, keeping it a one-goal game. It would remain that way, as the Privateers held on for the 1-0 win, their first shutout victory since a 7-0 triumph over Alverno in last year's season-opener.
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) (2-0-0) played all 90 minutes in goal and did not face a shot. Saint Elizabeth goalkeeper Salma Ibrahim (2-1-0), meanwhile, was credited with seven saves in a losing effort.
After opening the season with two straight at home, the Privateers hit the road for the first time on Saturday. Maritime visits SUNY Delhi (2-1-0) for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
