DELHI, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team played its first road game of the 2023 season on Saturday afternoon. After starting the campaign with a pair of victories, the Privateers (2-1-0) suffered their first loss of the year against the Broncos (3-1-0), dropping a 4-1 decision at Neil Riddell Field.
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) made four early saves before SUNY Delhi grabbed the lead in the 29
th minute. Maritime was called for a foul in the box and Shaniyah Myers stepped up to take the penalty kick. The Broncos scored three more times in the half, with Myers netting her second tally of the game in the 36
th minute before Lizzetta Myers added goals in the 40
th and 44
th minutes.
After three Maritime shots were stopped by SUNY Delhi goalkeeper Julia Ruppert in the opening minutes of the second half, the Privateers broke through in the 62
nd minute.
Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) had a shot that was saved and went out for a corner kick that would be taken by
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY). Morrill fed
Kathryn Sandford (Garden City, NY), who put home her third goa of the season to get Maritime within 4-1.
Maritime was outshot 21-6 in the game, and Etienne (2-1-0) made 11 saves in a losing effort. Abigail Allen (2-0-0) played the first half in goal for the Broncos and was credited with two saves. Ruppert posted three saves over the final 45 minutes.
On Tuesday, the Privateers (0-0-0 Skyline) open their Skyline Conference slate with a 7 p.m. matchup against Yeshiva (0-4-0, 0-4-0 Skyline) at Reinhart Field. It will be the second game of a Maritime soccer doubleheader. The men's team (1-1-1) faces York (0-1-1) at 4:30 p.m.
