Privateers Fall to Mount St. Mary

THROGGS NECK, NY – After playing two straight on the road, the Maritime College women's soccer team returned to Reinhart Field on Tuesday for a Skyline Conference matchup with Mount St. Mary.  The contest was scoreless at halftime, but the Knights (1-6-2, 1-0-2 Skyline) notched a pair of second half goals to earn a 2-0 win over the Privateers (5-3-0, 2-2-0 Skyline).

Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) was peppered early on, making four saves in the first 15 minutes.  Mount St. Mary also had a shot sail just over the crossbar.  The Privateers, meanwhile, had their best scoring chance in the 28th minute, when Hannah Crown's (Athens, NY) attempt was stopped by Mount St. Mary goalkeeper Christina Kakavas.  The Knights outshot the Privateers 9-2 in the first half, but Etienne was credited with six saves to keep it a 0-0 game.

Mount St. Mary broke through for a goal early in the second half.  Maria Baldwin sent a cross to Kaitlin Hansen in the 49th minute, and she put it home to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.  Mount St. Mary nearly scored again in the 61st minute, but Sara Williams (Oceanside, NY) prevented the goal with a spectacular header on the end line.

The Privateers had a chance to tie the game in the 69th minute.  Three successive shots by Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY), Stephanie DeMan (Millbrook, NY) and Williams were blocked, then, after a corner kick, Crown saw her attempt blocked, as well.  Mount St. Mary added an insurance tally from Darla Petricca in the 88th minute, as Maritime fell at home for the first time this season.

Etienne (5-3-0) faced 22 shots and recorded nine saves.  Kakavas (1-3-2), meanwhile, finished with two saves in the shutout victory.

On Saturday, Maritime is back on the road to square off with defending Skyline champion Sarah Lawrence (4-3-3, 1-0-2 Skyline) at 3 p.m.  The game will be played at Fleming Field in Yonkers.
