PATCHOGUE, NY – On a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College women's soccer team (5-2-0, 2-1-0 Skyline) dropped a 2-0 decision to St. Joseph's LI (4-2-0, 2-0-0 Skyline) at Danzi Stadium. The loss snapped the Privateers' three-game winning streak.
Maritime goalkeeper
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) made five saves in the first 20 minutes of the contest, and another shot was played off the goal line by the Privateers defense in the 25
th minute. The rebound went right to Brooke Esposito, though, and she put it home to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) nearly tied it six minutes later, but her attempt was stopped by St. Joseph's LI goalkeeper Kristin Vahle. Despite outshooting the Privateers 10-2 in the opening 45 minutes, the Golden Eagles led just 1-0 at halftime.
St. Joseph's LI doubled its advantage in the 63
rd minute. Gabriela Sarvia, who had just entered the game as a substitute, took a feed from Emily Harrington and found the back of the net to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0. That would prove to be the final, as the St. Joseph's LI defense held Maritime without a shot in the second half.
Etienne (5-2-0) was credited with seven saves in the loss. Vahle (4-1-0), meanwhile, posted two saves while recording her fourth shutout for the Golden Eagles this season.
The Privateers play three of their next four games at Reinhart Field, starting with a 5 p.m. matchup against Mount St. Mary (0-6-1, 0-0-1 Skyline) on Tuesday.
