PURCHASE, NY – A penalty kick by
Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) proved to be the difference on Wednesday night, as the Maritime College women's soccer team (5-1-0, 2-0-0 Skyline) earned a 1-0 triumph over Purchase (2-2-4, 1-1-0 Skyline) at Purchase College Turf Field. The victory continued the best start in program history and gave the Privateers their first three-game winning streak since Sept. 13-18, 2017.
Maritime was awarded a penalty kick after a Purchase foul in the box in the 73
rd minute. Sandford stepped up to the spot and put it home for her fifth goal of the year. The Panthers had two chances to tie it late, but
Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) made the save both times to preserve the shutout.
Etienne (5-1-0), who finished with seven saves, also stopped a pair of attempts during a flurry of Purchase shots in the first half. The Privateers' best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 44
th minute, when
Hannah Crown's (Athens, NY) shot was saved by Carolyn Hough. Hough (2-2-4) was also credited with three second-half saves, but Sandford's goal on the penalty kick proved enough to give Maritime the victory.
Up next for the Privateers is a 12 p.m. matchup at St. Joseph's LI (3-2-0, 1-0-0 Skyline) on Saturday. It marks the only time this season Maritime will play back-to-back road games.
