Maritime Defeated By Endicott

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College football team welcomed Endicott to Reinhart Field for its final non-conference game of the season.  The Gulls (2-1), who've played in the last two NCAA Tournaments, scored touchdowns on their first two drives and held the Privateers (2-1) to just 163 yards of total offense en route to a 27-0 win.

Endicott's Jake Trahan returned the opening kickoff 76 yards to the Maritime 2, and the Gulls took the lead one play later when Anthony Caggianelli rumbled into the end zone.  After the Privateers punted, Caggianelli capped a nine-play, 62-yard drive with his second two-yard touchdown rush of the first quarter.

It was still 14-0 with 5:19 remaining in the second quarter when Tim Gasparik (Seaford, NY) forced a fumble and fell on it at the Endicott 45.  The ensuing Maritime drive stalled on the Endicott 33, however, and the Gulls followed with a 10-play march that ended with Ryan Smith's 28-yard field goal.  Endicott then added 10 points in the third quarter on a six-yard touchdown pass from Clayton Marengi to Jacob Ward and a 38-yard field goal by Smith.

Steven Stassi (East Islip, NY) went 13-for-28 passing for 87 yards.  Nick Campo (Staten Island, NY) led the Privateers with five catches, and Devin Cline (Miller Place, NY) gained 50 yards on 11 carries.  Defensively, Sergio Borda (Toms River, NJ) paced Maritime with 13 tackles, while Sean Murphy (Bayville, NY) and Gino Fundaro (Levittown, NY) each recorded a sack.

For the Gulls, Marengi finished 13-for-21 for 138 yards and a touchdown.  Yavier Cosme-Diaz carried eight times for 59 yards, while Shane Aylward had 51 receiving yards on three catches.  Adam Goodfellow, meanwhile, caught a pair of passes for 50 yards.  Jackson DeAngelo tallied 10 tackles for an Endicott defense that posted its second shutout in three games this season.  It marked the first time the Privateers were shut out since the 2019 NCAA Tournament against Salisbury.

Up next, Maritime plays its first-ever New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference game against a familiar opponent—Merchant Marine.  The Privateers (0-0 NEWMAC) visit the rival Mariners (2-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) next Saturday at 12 p.m.  In last season's meeting, which was also at Kings Point, Merchant Marine earned a 48-13 victory.
