Privateers Drop Rainy Regular Season Finale In Overtime

PATCHOGUE, NY – On a rainy Saturday, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season against host St. Joseph's LI at Danzi Stadium.  The Privateers (12-3, 7-1 Skyline), who had already secured the No. 1 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament, suffered their first conference loss of the season, dropping an 11-10 overtime decision to the Golden Eagles (6-6, 5-3 Skyline).

Maritime got off to a good start, opening up a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter.  St. Joseph's LI scored the next two goals before Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) and Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) found the back of the net to push the margin back to four at 6-2.  However, the Golden Eagles' Brooke Zecchini put one away with nine seconds left in the quarter to make it a 6-3 game.

After Gabrielle Nicolosi's (West Islip, NY) tally at the 9:50 mark of the second quarter, St. Joseph's LI rattled off four straight goals to tie the score at 7-7.  Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) put the Privateers back in front, but the Golden Eagles again responded late in the third quarter, and the contest entered the final period level at 8-8.

St. Joseph's LI took its first lead on Kayleigh Mimnaugh's goal with 1:56 remaining.  It took Maritime just 20 seconds to tie it, though, as Lesiewicz won the draw and fed Commodore, who evened the score at 10-10.  The Golden Eagles controlled the ensuing draw and had two shots go wide before the Privateers got one final chance to win it in regulation.  Lesiewicz's shot was off the mark, though, and the game went into overtime.

The Privateers started the extra session with possession and had a free position attempt less than a minute in.  After the shot sailed wide, Nicolosi was issued a yellow card.  St. Joseph's LI took advantage of having the extra player, as Mimnaugh earned a free position opportunity, and put it away to give the Golden Eagles the victory.

Lesiewicz had three goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.  Commodore finished with two goals and an assist, while Nicolosi also scored twice and Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) handed out three assists.  Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) picked up a team-best five ground balls, and Johnson controlled seven draws.  Sarah Malone (Land O'Lakes, FL) (0-1) made her first start in net and recorded 14 saves.

Mimnaugh tallied four goals and an assist for the Golden Eagles.  Zecchini contributed three goals, and Jamie Trowbridge also had three points on a goal and two assists.  Emma Lange posted four draw controls, while Megan Spina caused three turnovers and collected three ground balls.  In addition to notching five ground balls and three caused turnovers, goalkeeper Maggie Harding (6-6) saved 13 Maritime shots.

As the No. 1 seed, the Privateers will have a bye in the first round of the Skyline Tournament.  Maritime will welcome the winner of Tuesday's game between St. Joseph's LI and Manhattanville (12-4, 5-3 Skyline) to Reinhart Field for the semifinals on Thursday.
