PATCHOGUE, NY – Heading into Friday's doubleheader against the Maritime College baseball team, St. Joseph's LI had lost one Skyline Conference game all season.  The Golden Eagles have now lost
three conference games.  Maritime (22-12, 9-5 Skyline) took the first game at Gregg Alfano Field by a 4-3 count before completing the sweep with a 7-5 victory over St. Joseph's LI (24-6, 13-3 Skyline) in the nightcap.
Originally scheduled for Saturday, the twinbill was moved up a day due to the weekend weather forecast.  Playing a day earlier didn't faze the Privateers, though, as Maritime immediately got on the board in the top of the first in game one.
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) drew a walk before
Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) crushed a two-run homer to left.  The Privateers threatened for more after
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) and
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) both walked, but St. Joseph's LI pitcher Peter Manger got out of the inning with no further damage.
After the Golden Eagles put one on the board in their half of the first, Maritime picked up two more in the top of the second.  With one out,
Ian Wilson (Bayonne, NJ) walked and
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) singled before Forgione drove in Wilson with a base hit.  Copozzi then made it 4-1 with the Privateers' third single of the inning.
Ryan Decoursey led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run, then John Lynch and Joe Sanguedolce followed with back-to-back singles.  However, after James Maggio bunted the runners over to second and third,
Matthew Demme (Carmel, NY) induced a grounder back to the mound and a line drive to center to end the threat.  It was still 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Jake Giannico's RBI single brought up Decoursey as the tying run with one out.  He sent a grounder towards third, though, and Forgione started the game-ending double play, giving Maritime the 4-3 victory.
Demme (7-1) tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out one and not issuing a walk.  Milone was the only Privateer with multiple hits in the contest, finishing 2-for-4 with a homer, a run scored and two RBIs.
For St. Joseph's LI, Giannico was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Lynch also had two hits.  Phil Krpata, meanwhile, scored two of the Golden Eagles' three runs.  Starting pitcher Anthony Cinquemani (6-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on a hit and three walks over 0.2 innings.  Manger went the final 6.1 innings on the mound, holding Maritime to two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
In game two, the Golden Eagles took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second.  Maritime responded with a two-spot of its own in the top of the third, though.  After a walk, an error and a sacrifice bunt, Forgione drove in a run on a grounder back to the pitcher.  Milone followed with the game-tying triple to right center.
Maritime then batted around in the fourth, putting five runs on the board.
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) scored on
Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) bunt single before the Privateers got three successive two-out doubles from Madigan, Forgione and Milone to open up a 7-2 lead.
St. Joseph's LI got within 7-3 on Sanguedolce's solo homer in the sixth, and the Golden Eagles rallied again in the bottom of the ninth.  Nick Vicino started the inning with a single up the middle before scoring on Hermes Abreu's double.  After a groundout, Paul Gugliuzzo singled to make it 7-5 and bring the tying run to the plate.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) retired Giannico on a flyout, though, to finish off the doubleheader sweep.
Milone recorded two extra-base hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs.  Frazzetta was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while
Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) also scored twice and Forgione drove in three runs.
Brandon Stanley (Swedesboro, NY) (7-2) earned the win after yielding three runs on nine hits over seven innings.  He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
William Chu (Port Washington, NY) allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth, and Kellner pitched the ninth, surrendering two runs on three hits.
The Golden Eagles outhit the Privateers 13-10 in the contest, with Gugliuzzo and Vicino both recording three hits.  Sanguedolce, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.  Jack Kelly (4-1) started on the mound for St. Joseph's LI and lasted 3.2 innings.  He was charged with seven runs (six earned) on eight hits while issuing three walks and notching three strikeouts.  Dante Morabito shut Maritime out over the final 5.1 innings. He gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out three.
Next up for the Privateers is their final road doubleheader of season at Purchase (15-16, 6-6 Skyline).  The twinbill is currently set for Sunday at 11 a.m., but, with inclement weather again in the forecast, may be rescheduled for Tuesday.
