Privateers Wrap Up Road Schedule

PURCHASE, NY – After being postponed two days by rain, the Maritime College baseball team took the field for its final road doubleheader of the season on Tuesday.  The Privateers (23-13, 10-6 Skyline) scored three runs in the seventh to earn an 8-6 victory in Game 1 before Purchase (17-17, 7-7 Skyline) won the nightcap at Purchase College Baseball Field by a 9-8 count.

The Privateers wasted little time in the opener, plating three runs in the first inning.  Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) led off the game with a single, moved to third on an error, and scored on Freddy Forgione's (Ronkonkoma, NY) single through the left side.  Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) then made it 3-0 with a home run to right.

Purchase responded with a run in the bottom of the first, then another in the second before taking the lead with a two-run third.  The Panthers increased their advantage to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but Maritime rallied for two in the sixth to tie it.  Copozzi started the inning with a walk, moved to third on Jaden Shea's (Severn, MD) double, and scored on a ground ball by Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY).  Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center that knotted the score at 5-5.

In the top of the seventh, Maritime loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Madigan, Forgione and Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY).  With one out, Shea sent a double to left field, knocking in two, before Milone came across on a Ventura groundout.  Staked to an 8-5 lead, Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in the bottom half of the inning, yielding just a sacrifice fly while striking out the other two batters he faced.  Kellner picked up his fourth save of the season in preserving the Privateers' 8-6 victory.

Shea and Forgione each went 3-for-4 in the contest.  Copozzi scored twice and knocked in a pair on his homer, while Madigan finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Starting pitcher Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) lasted five innings. He allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits, struck out six and walked one.  William Chu (Port Washington, NY) (2-0) was credited with the win after giving up one run on one hit with a strikeout and a walk in an inning-plus.

For the Panthers, Patrick Reyes was 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Matt Castrogiovanni and Sam Saltzman, meanwhile, both ended up 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Saltzman also collected an RBI.  Myles Scarry (3-6) tossed a complete game for Purchase, surrendering eight runs on 10 hits, striking out eight and walking two.

Game two was a back-and-forth affair.  The Panthers got a run in the bottom of the first, but the Privateers drew even on Michael Frazzetta's (Howard Beach, NY) RBI double in the second.  After Purchase put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth, Maritime again responded with three in the fifth.  Frazzetta doubled and Forgione singled before Milone drove in one with a sacrifice fly to left.  Copozzi then doubled in a run, moved to third on a Shea single, and scored the tying run on a throwing error.  However, Purchase immediately regained the lead when Liam Daly singled in a run and Reyes followed with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.

Pinggera started the sixth inning with a single, and he eventually came around to score on a Madigan sacrifice fly.  After Forgione drew a walk to put two runners on with two out for Milone, the Privateers' center fielder crushed his 11th home run of the season, a three-run shot to left that put Maritime in front, 8-6.  The Panthers then got one in their half of the inning to make it an 8-7 game.

It was still 8-7 heading to the bottom of the ninth, when Purchase put together a game-winning, two-run rally.  Scarry tripled to right leading off the inning, then scored on pinch hitter Matt Castrogiovanni's base hit to left center.  A Reyes single put two runners on for the Panthers, and Frank Rega delivered a two-out, walk-off single that gave Purchase the 9-8 victory.

Frazzetta was the only Privateer with multiple hits in game two.  He finished 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.  Milone drove in four, including three on his homer, while Forgione and Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) both crossed the plate twice.  Jonathan Racanello (New Rochelle, NY) made the start on the mound and went three innings.  He was charged with four runs on four hits while striking out two.  William Giuliani (Levittown, NY) and Evan Block (Seaford, NY) followed before Joseph Sorge (Montgomery, NY) (0-2) tossed the final three innings.  He took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits.  Sorge also registered a pair of strikeouts.

As a team, Purchase recorded 13 hits, three of which were by Reyes.  Daly finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs, and Scarry was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Trevor Zanderzuk also came around to score twice for the Panthers.  Ryan Castrataro went the first five innings on the mound, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits, walking five and striking out one.  Cass Muller yielded two runs over two innings before Jackson Lowery pitched the eighth and surrendered one hit.  Jemal Betances (1-0), who started the game at shortstop, earned the win after tossing a hitless ninth.  He was credited with one strikeout and issued one walk.

Maritime's last two doubleheaders of the season will both take place at Reinhart Baseball Field this weekend, starting with a matchup against Farmingdale (16-15, 8-8 Skyline) on Saturday.  The twinbill is currently scheduled for 12 p.m., but will be moved to a 3 p.m. start if the women's lacrosse team wins its semifinal and hosts the Skyline Championship Game, which is also set for Saturday.
