Privateers Defeated Twice at Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, NY – Last year, the Maritime College baseball team saw its season end with a 5-0 loss at Merchant Marine in the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.  On Sunday, the Privateers visited Bartoszek Field for the first time since that game. The results, however, were unfortunately the same, as the Mariners (18-11, 7-5 Skyline) swept the doubleheader with Maritime (20-12, 7-5 Skyline), earning a 9-3 victory in game one before winning game two, 5-4.

The Privateers got on the board first in game one with three runs in the top of the third.  After Chris Felder (Wallingford, PA) walked and Ian Wilson (Bayonne, NJ) reached on an error, Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) singled to load the bases.  Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, then Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) drew a walk.  Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) followed with an RBI single before Jaden Shea's (Severn, MD) sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

However, Merchant Marine countered with a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning.  The Mariners then added four runs in the fourth.  Maritime, meanwhile, only had two base runners over the final four innings, as Merchant Marine won by a 9-3 count.

Madigan recorded two of the Privateers' five hits in the game, and he also scored a run.  Copozzi was 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Starting pitcher Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) (3-1) took the loss after allowing nine runs on nine hits and a walk over 3.1 innings. William Chu (Port Washington, NY) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, holding Merchant Marine to a pair of hits and picking up a strikeout.

In addition to going 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, Tyler Reistetter (4-2) threw a complete game on the mound.  He yielded three runs (one earned) on five hits, struck out eight and walked two.  Jack Millen was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Jared Chambers also knocked in a pair and Charles Cahalan finished 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Maritime again took an early lead in game two when Madigan ripped a two-run single to left in the top of the second.  Merchant Marine responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning, though, then took the lead with a three-spot in the third.

After the Privateers got one back on Forgione's RBI single in the top of the fourth, Maritime tied the game with an unearned tally in the eighth.  Felder reached on an error with two out, then stole second before scoring on Madigan's single to right.  The Mariners immediately countered in the bottom of the eighth, however, as Reistetter led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and came across on Garrett Clapsaddle's single.

Copozzi doubled with one out in the top of the ninth, but he was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple.  After Shea singled to put the tying run on base, Merchant Marine pitcher Quin Fitzgerald retired Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) on a popup to give the Mariners a 5-4 victory at the doubleheader sweep.

Four different Privateers had two hits in the contest, with Madigan going 2-for-5 with three RBIs.  Forgione finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Shea was 2-for-5 with a run scored.  Brandon Stanley (Swedesboro, NY) went six innings on the mound, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out six.  Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) (1-2) took the loss after surrendering one run on three hits over the final two innings.

Merchant Marine collected nine hits as a team.  Clapsaddle went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored, while Reistetter doubled twice and scored twice.  Chambers added a double and two RBIs.  Kole Register pitched the first six innings for the Mariners.  He allowed three runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked four.  Fitzgerald (1-0) earned the win after giving up one unearned run and three hits over three innings of work.  He was credited with one strikeout.

This was the start of a six-game road trip for the Privateers.  Maritime visits defending Skyline champion St. Joseph's LI (24-3, 13-1 Skyline) on Saturday for an 11 a.m. twinbill.
