Privateers Stay Unbeaten In Conference Play

RIVERDALE, NY – The Maritime College women's lacrosse team went into Saturday's contest at Mount St. Vincent knowing that a win wouldn't just clinch a playoff berth, it would secure a first-round bye.  Mission accomplished.  The Privateers (11-2, 7-0 Skyline) earned an 18-7 victory over the Dolphins (2-9, 1-5 Skyline) at Marillac Field to wrap up their fourth consecutive postseason spot.

After the Dolphins' Alicia Rodriguez scored the first goal of the game, Maritime rattled off four straight to open up a 4-1 lead.  Jenna Lesiewicz's (Wading River, NY) tally with 38 seconds left in the first quarter made it 6-3 in favor of the Privateers.  Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY) then found the back of the net less than a minute into the second quarter, as Maritime outscored Mount St. Vincent 7-1 in the period to extend its cushion to 13-4.

Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) made it six straight Privateer goals early in the third quarter, and it was a 15-5 game at the end of the quarter.  After Maritime added the first three scores of the fourth quarter, Mount St. Vincent's Ava Starace and Kainani McConville wrapped up the scoring in the Privateers' 18-7 win.

Johnson reached the 100-point plateau after scoring six times.  She also had five ground balls and five draw controls.  Nicolosi finished with five goals and an assist, while Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-On-Hudson, NY) scored once to go along with four assists.  In addition to tallying three goals, Lesiewicz paced the Privateers with seven draw controls, six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (11-2) made one save before having to be removed with an injury.  Chelsea Gostomski (Bel Air, MD) stepped in and recorded a pair of saves over the final 51-plus minutes.

Three different Dolphins scored twice in the game.  Rodriguez led Mount St. Vincent with nine draw controls and six ground balls to go along with her two goals.  Starce and Macey Forg also found the back of the net two times, while Kaitlyn Cronin caused three turnovers.  Katherine Hungerford (2-9) was credited with 14 saves in a losing effort.

Maritime is guaranteed at least the No. 2 seed in the Skyline Tournament and will host a semifinal game on May 4.  The Privateers will clinch the No. 2 seed if they defeat Old Westbury (2-6, 1-4 Skyline) in their final home contest of the regular season at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
