Offense Erupts For 25 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep

THROGGS NECK, NY – One day after scoring eight runs over the final four innings of a thrilling comeback victory over Mount St. Mary, the Maritime College baseball team's offense picked up right where it left off against Manhattanville on Sunday.  The Privateers (18-9, 6-2 Skyline) combined for 25 runs in the doubleheader, earning a 13-8 win in the opener before topping the Valiants (10-16, 4-6 Skyline) by a 12-6 count in game two.  Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) had three home runs and eight RBIs in the twinbill.

Maritime started game one with seven consecutive hits, and all seven runners came around to score.  After singles by Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) and Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY), Forgione crushed a three-run homer to left.  Jaden Shea (Severn, MD), Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) and Ian Wilson (Bayonne, NJ) added RBI singles before Madigan capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.

Chris Goohs hit a three-run homer for Manhattanville in the top of the second before Shea made it 8-3 with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.  The Privateers then took advantage of seven walks to put up a five-spot in the third.  Manhattanville batted around in the fifth, scoring three times to pull within 13-6.  After the Valiants picked up another run in the sixth, a bases loaded walk in the top of the seventh brought the tying run to the plate with two out.  Maritime Head Coach Charlie Barbieri called on Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) out of the bullpen, and he retired Tyler Mandel on a fly ball to center to finish off the 13-8 victory.

Every Maritime starter reached base in game one, with eight Privateers scoring and eight driving in a run.  Shea went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs, while Madigan was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Forgione crossed the plate three times and collected three RBIs on his fifth home run of the season.  Matthew Demme (Carmel, NY) (5-1) tossed the first 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on four hits, striking out five and walking two.  William Giuliani (Levittown, NY) followed with 1.2 innings of relief, yielding one run on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk.  John Ohanian (Bellmore, NY) gave up one run on a hit and a walk over 0.2 innings before Kellner came in to pick up his second save.

Brian Bornkamp reached base all four times for the Valiants, finishing 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.  Frank Delgado was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Goohs went 1-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored.  Tyler Mandel drove in two runs for Manhattanville.  Starting pitcher Alby Ciuffetelli (2-1) took the loss after allowing the seven straight hits and seven runs to open the contest.  He was followed by four Valiants relievers, with Jack Taggart tossing the final three innings and holding Maritime without a run.  Taggart surrendered two hits and walked one while recording a pair of strikeouts.

Manhattanville took an early game two lead on Mandel's two-run homer in the top of the first, but Maritime immediately responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.  Forgione tied the game with a two-run homer before Matt Milone's (Farmingville, NY) solo shot gave the Privateers the lead.  After the Valiants went back in front with three unearned runs in the third, Maritime again immediately countered.  Pinggera started the bottom of the third with a double to center that was almost an incredible catch, and Forgione followed with his second two-run blast in as many at-bats.  Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) then doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

After Manhattanville tied it with a run in the top of the fourth, Forgione put Maritime back in front with his 100th career hit, an RBI double.  Milone then led off the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the game, a blast to center field that made it 8-6.  The Privateers then broke it open with four runs in the seventh.  Maritime loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before Vafakos smoked a bases-clearing double that was just fair down the left field line.  He later scored on Madigan's RBI single to center.

Starting pitcher Brandon Stanley (Swedesboro, NY) (6-2) went five innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out four and walking four.  William Chu (Port Washington, NY) and Joseph Sorge (Montgomery, NY) followed with four innings of perfect relief.  Chu pitched the sixth and recorded one strikeout, while Sorge earned his first collegiate save after tossing the final three innings. He struck out the side in the seventh and had five strikeouts overall.

Offensively, the Privateers pounded out 14 hits, with Forgione going 3-for-5 with a double, two homers, two runs scored and five RBIs.  Milone's two home runs give him seven on the year to put him in a tie with Forgione for the team lead.  He also scored another run.  Copozzi finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Pinggera was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

For the Valiants, Mandel and Bornkamp each crossed the plate twice.  Michael Musantry, meanwhile, finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Chris Antonelli (2-2) started on the mound and took the loss.  He gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks while notching four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.  Sean Demo followed with 2.2 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks before Matthew Messina tossed the final two innings.  He yielded two runs on four hits and struck out two.

The Privateers return to action on Tuesday afternoon, when they visit FDU-Florham (7-23) at 3:30 p.m.  It will be Maritime's final non-conference game of the season.
