Milone Hits For Maritime’s First-Ever Cycle

MADISON, NJ – Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY) made Maritime College baseball history on Tuesday afternoon.  He became the first Privateer ever to hit for the cycle.  Milone homered in the second, doubled in the third, singled in the fourth, then completed the cycle with a sixth-inning triple, as Maritime (19-9) notched an 11-2 victory over FDU-Florham (7-23) at Naimoli Family Ballpark.

Milone's home run gave the Privateers a 1-0 lead.  Maritime then scored three times in the third.  After Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) came across on an error, Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) ripped an RBI single before Milone drove in another run with his double to right center.  The Privateers used a four-run fourth to extend their cushion to 8-0.  After four consecutive walks led to one run, another came across on a fielder's choice, then Patrick Bartoletta (Plainview, NY) brought home two on a single to right center.  Milone got his single with two out in the inning.

In the fifth, Copozzi drew a one-out walk to bring up Milone, who needed the triple for the cycle.  And that's exactly what he got, driving one to the gap in right center and knocking in Copozzi.  Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) knocked him in with a double down the right field line.  Milone came up again in the seventh and made it 11-0 with another RBI double.  FDU-Florham picked up two in the bottom of the seventh to cap the scoring in Maritime's 11-2 win.

With his five hits, Milone equaled the program single-game record.  He finished 5-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBIs.  Bartoletta was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Pinggera and Copozzi both crossed the plate twice.  Jonathan Racanello (New Rochelle, NY) got the start on the mound and went two innings.  He retired six of the seven batters he faced, allowing just one walk and striking out three.  Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ) (1-1) was credited with the win after yielding just one hit and one walk while recording a pair of strikeouts over two shutout innings.  William Giuliani (Levittown, NY), Evan Block (Seaford, NY), John Ohanian (Bellmore, NY) and Sean Mylan (Lynbrook, NY) combined to go five innings out of the bullpen.

FDU-Florham was held to four hits, with Jimmy Finnerty and Matt Aber roping doubles.  Finnerty also had an RBI and scored a run.  Starter Robbie Hughes (0-2) pitched three innings for the Knights and took the loss.  He was charged with four runs (one earned) on four hits, struck out two and walked three.

This was Maritime's final non-conference contest of the season.  The Privateers (6-2 Skyline) resume their Skyline Conference schedule by welcoming Mount St. Vincent (16-10, 7-2 Skyline) to Reinhart Baseball Field for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
