THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College baseball team trailed Mount St. Mary 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning in game two of a doubleheader at Reinhart Baseball Field. The Privateers proceeded to score three runs in the inning, then added three more in the eighth and one in the ninth before winning, 9-8, on
Jaden Shea's (Severn, MD) squeeze bunt in the 10
th. Maritime (16-9, 4-2 Skyline) also took game one over the Knights (6-19, 2-6 Skyline) by an 11-3 count.
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) started the comeback with a leadoff home run in the seventh. After
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) singled and
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) doubled,
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) drove in a run with a groundout. Forgione then scored on a wild pitch to bring the Privateers within 8-4. In the eighth, four consecutive walks led to another Maritime run before Copozzi knocked in two more with a single to left center. The Privateers then tied it in the ninth when
Chris Felder (Wallingford, PA), who had walked and stole second, scored on an error.
After
William Chu (Port Washington, NY) worked around a one-out walk in the top of the 10
th, Copozzi walked to start the game-winning rally. He then stole second, prompting the Knights to intentionally walk
Matt Milone (Farmingville, NY). With Shea up, Copozzi took off for third and just beat the throw. On the next pitch, Shea dropped down a perfectly-placed bunt between the mound and first base, allowing Copozzi to come home and complete the eight-run comeback.
Mount St. Mary hit four solo home runs in the first three innings to build a 4-0 lead before Forgione went deep in the bottom of the third to put the Privateers on the board. The Knights added one in the fourth, then Robert Brust launched his second homer of the game, a three-run shot to center, in the fifth.
However, the Maritime bullpen shut Mount St. Mary down from there.
John Ohanian (Bellmore, NY),
William Giuliani (Levittown, NY),
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) and Chu combined to pitch five scoreless innings, holding the Knights to just one single and two walks while recording three strikeouts between them. Chu (1-0) went the final two innings and earned his first collegiate win. Starting pitcher
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) lasted 2.2 innings, allowing the four home runs and walking two. He also struck out three.
Forgione finished a triple shy of the cycle in the game, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Mione was also 3-for-5, while Frazzetta and
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) both scored twice. Copozzi, meanwhile, tallied three RBIs.
For Mount St. Mary, Brust was 2-for-4 with two homers, three runs scored and four RBIs. Anthony Franco also went deep twice and collected three RBIs, and Brandon Nolasco hit the fifth Knight home run of the game. Mike Scotto started on the mound and pitched 6.1 innings. He yielded four runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked two. Michael Di Tullio (0-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits with four walks and a strikeout over two innings.
In game one, Mount St. Mary jumped out to an early lead on Jack Goodwin's third-inning home run. The Privateers responded with a five-spot in the fourth, though. Forgione and Copozzi started the inning with back-to-back singles before Milone walked to load the bases. After Shea tied the game with a single, another run scored when
Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) reached on a fielder's choice. Felder was up next, and he belted a three-run homer to left center that gave Maritime a 5-1 lead.
The Knights got two in the top of the fifth to pull within 5-3, but the Privateers broke it open with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Milone started the inning with a home run to left center, then Shea drew a walk and Vafakos drove him in with a double. After Madigan roped an RBI single to left, Forgione crushed a three-run homer to left that made it 11-3.
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) the retired Mount St. Mary in order in the top of the seventh to finish off the victory.
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) (3-0) earned the win after tossing the first five innings. He surrendered three runs on three hits, struck out seven and walked two. Kellner went the final two innings and was credited with his first collegiate save. The only baserunner he allowed, on a leadoff single to the first batter he faced, was immediately erased on a double play.
Offensively, the Privateers pounded out 10 hits, with Forgione going 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs. Felder drove in three on his home run, while Vafakos finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Shea reached base all three times, ending up 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Milone, meanwhile, crossed the plate twice.
Anthony Franco had two of the Knights' four hits. He also scored a run. Goodwin's homer and a Nolasco single were the only other Mount St. Mary base knocks. Liam Horan (0-4) pitched the first five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Christopher Snyder gave up five runs on three hits while striking out three and walking two in the sixth.
Maritime returns to Reinhart Baseball Field for another Skyline Conference twinbill on Sunday. The Privateers will take on Manhattanville (10-14, 4-4 Skyline) starting at 12 p.m.
