FORT PIERCE, FL – The Maritime College baseball team played a single, nine-inning game against Monmouth (IL) to conclude its annual Florida Spring trip on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers (3-4) suffered their third straight loss, however, falling to the Fighting Scots (1-0) by a 24-9 margin at the Lanwood Sports Complex.
Monmouth (IL) took advantage of two Maritime errors to score seven runs in the bottom of the first. The Fighting Scots then added five more in the second before the Privateers got on the board with two in the top of the third. After
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) and
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) were each hit by a pitch,
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) doubled home both runners. Maritime pulled within 12-5 in the fourth when
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) roped an RBI double and
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) followed with a two-run homer.
However, the Fighting Scots put up a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning to make it 17-5. Forgione ripped his second RBI double of the game in the fifth, then had another in the seventh. After Monmouth (IL) plated six in the eighth, Copozzi lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the ninth for his third RBI of the game, capping the scoring in the Fighting Scots' 24-9 victory.
Forgione finished 4-for-5 with three doubles and four RBIs.
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Shea drove in a pair.
Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ) (0-1) took a tough-luck loss after giving up seven unearned runs in 0.2 innings of work.
Joseph Sorge (Montgomery, NY),
Jack Kellner (Seaford, NY) and
William Chu (Port Washington, NY) followed him on the mound before Copozzi notched a pair of strikeouts in the eighth.
Every Monmouth (IL) starter recorded at least one hit, and nine different Fighting Scots had an RBI. Logan Komater went 5-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Nathan Reed was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three runs scored. Daniel Lumms contributed a double and a triple as part of a three-hit effort. He scored four times and knocked in six runs. Starting pitcher Addison Fletcher (1-0) earned the win after allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out eight over five innings.
After playing five games in three days during the trip, the Privateers will now have a week off before returning to action. Maritime welcomes CCNY (0-4) to Reinhart Baseball Field next Saturday, March 11, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
