THROGGS NECK, NY – On Friday afternoon, the Maritime College baseball team welcomed CCNY to Reinhart Baseball Field for a doubleheader. After winning the first game by a 21-4 count, the Privateers (5-4) earned a 22-7 victory over the Beavers (0-8) in game two. Game one marked the first time Maritime scored 20 or more runs in a game since a 21-8 victory at St. Joseph's during the Privateers' championship run at the 2017 Skyline Conference Tournament. It was also the first time that the team scored 20-plus in consecutive games going back to at least 2005.
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) put Maritime ahead with a solo home run in the first inning of game one.
Chris Felder (Wallingford, PA) then made it 3-0 with a two-run double to right center. The Privateers added six runs in the second before posting a four-spot in the bottom of the third.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) ripped an RBI double and later scored on
Matt Milone's (Farmingville, NY) two-base hit.
After CCNY's Rich Ciriglinao hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth, Shea and Milone were at the heart of another Maritime rally in the fifth. Shea belted an RBI single to right center, while Milone followed with a three-run blast to left. The Privateers scored four more times in the bottom of the sixth on two-run homers by
Ryan Wood (Huntington Station, NY) and
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY). It was the first collegiate home run for both Wood and Ventura.
Every Maritime starter had at least one hit and one run scored in the opener. Shea and
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) each finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Pinggera was also 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Milone, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBIs.
Matthew Demme (Carmel, NY) (1-1) got the start on the mound and earned the win. He gave up four runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked three over four innings.
Cirigliano's grand slam was one of two hits for him. Jonathan Rivera also contributed two hits for the Beavers. Richard Vento (0-2) took the loss after surrendering nine runs (five earned) on seven hits in 1.2 innings of work. He issued two walks and recorded one strikeout.
In game two, CCNY took an early lead on Rivera's three-run homer in the top of the first. Maritime batted around in the bottom of the second, though, putting up seven runs to go ahead 7-3. Shea and Felder then crushed back-to-back homers in the third to extend the Privateers' advantage to 9-3.
CCNY got one run back in the top of the fourth, but Shea responded with a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning. Maritime then sent 16 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring 11 times.
Christian Ark (Rocky Point, NY) had three RBIs during the rally. The Beavers put up three runs in the sixth to make it a 22-7 final.
Shea went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs, giving him five hits, five runs and six RBIs in the twinbill. Ark crushed three doubles, scored three times and drove in three runs, while Felder was 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs.
Michael Frazzetta (Howard Beach, NY) and
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) each crossed the plate three times in the win.
Brandon Stanley (Swedesboro, NY) improved to 3-0 on the season after yielding four runs (two earned) on two hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked three.
Rivera had two of CCNY's four hits in the contest, including a three-run homer. John Creegan, meanwhile, finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Starting pitcher Ismael Jimenez (0-1) lasted 1.2 innings. He was charged with seven runs (four earned) and seven hits while tallying a pair of strikeouts.
The Privateers return to action on Sunday, when they visit Centenary (5-4) for a 12 p.m. twinbill.
