BROOKLYN, NY – After playing through the rain on Saturday, the Maritime College baseball team had a beautiful day for its doubleheader with John Jay on Sunday afternoon. And the Privateers responded with a pair of complete efforts. Maritime (12-7) took first game by an 18-2 count before earning a 10-3 win over the Bloodhounds (2-18) in game two at Maimonides Park.
In game one, the Privateers opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the second.
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) smacked a two-run triple to the gap in right center, then
Nick Pinggera (Kings Park, NY) followed with an RBI single that knocked in Madigan. Maritime then put up a five-spot in the top of the fourth. Madigan capped the rally with his second two-run hits in as many at-bats, a single to center.
Maritime added four more in the fifth and three in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bloodhounds finally got to
Matthew Demme (Carmel, NY), who had only given up one hit (a one-out single in the first) to that point. Three consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly resulted in two runs that brought John Jay within 15-2. However, the Privateers kept their offensive onslaught going in the top of the seventh, scoring three times on five straight two-out singles.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY) then pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to finish off the 18-2 victory.
As a team, Maritime belted out 19 hits in game one. Sixteen different Privateers reached base, with 12 scoring and 12 driving in a run. Madigan had three hits and four RBIs, while
Randy Ventura (Syosset, NY) was 2-for-2 with three RBIs after entering as a pinch hitter.
Jake Bernardi (Bronx, NY) and
Ryan Wood (Huntington Station, NY) both went 2-for-2 with two runs scored off the bench. Demme (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk over six innings.
Tyler DeStefano recorded two of John Jay's four hits and scored a run. Starting pitcher Christian Sanacora (0-1) lasted three innings and took the loss. He gave up three runs on four hits while walking five and striking out two.
Madigan was at the heart of another second-inning Maritime rally in game two. After
Rob Copozzi (Center Moriches, NY) scored on a wild pitch and
Ian Wilson (Bayonne, NJ) drove in a run on a groundout, Madigan made it 4-0 with his two-run single to right. The Privateers then added two in the sixth to extend their advantage to 6-0.
John Jay cut its deficit in half with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Joseph Salerno hit a two-run double before scoring on an error.
However, Maritime responded with five runs in the top of the sixth. Madigan had an RBI single as a part of the rally. He then came up again in the seventh and crushed a two-run homer to left field, giving him six hits and nine RBIs on the day. Now leading 13-3,
Andrew Heiderstadt (Farmingdale, NY) came back out for the seventh and worked around two base runners to wrap up his first collegiate complete game.
Heiderstadt (2-1) yielded three runs (two earned) on three hits, struck out eight and walked two. Madigan was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBIs in game two, while
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Vasilios Vafakos (Astoria, NY) had two hits and two runs scored. Wilson also scored twice, and he added a pair of RBIs.
Salerno went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Bloodhounds. John Spallin recorded the only other John Jay hit, a fifth-inning single that followed Salerno's double. Marc Weeks (1-5) started on the mound for the Bloodhounds and lasted five innings. He surrendered six runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked two.
The Privateers will now have a week off before the start of Skyline Conference play. Maritime (0-0 Skyline) visits St. Joseph's Brooklyn (5-8, 2-0 Skyline) next Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
