KINGS POINT, NY – The Maritime College men's and women's swimming & diving teams wrapped up the 2023 portion of the schedule at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's O'Hara Pool on Saturday. In addition to the host Mariners, the Privateers took on Sarah Lawrence, as well as the Hunter women. Maritime's men earned a win over Sarah Lawrence and lost to Merchant Marine, while the women's squad fell to all three opponents.
On the men's side, the Privateers defeated Sarah Lawrence by a 100-22 count and dropped a 197-32 decision against the host Mariners. The Maritime women suffered a 127-69 loss against Hunter and was bested by Sarah Lawrence, 112-68. Merchant Marine, meanwhile, topped the Privateers by a score of 158-48.
Rowan Hayes (Floral Park, NY), who set a school record in the men's 100 yard breaststroke in this pool on Nov. 18, won the event on Saturday with a 1:00.20 clocking. He also grabbed second place in the 100 yard freestyle (49.48). After taking fifth in the 50 yard freestyle (24.70),
Will Kim (Westbury, NY) notched another fifth-place finish in the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.13).
For the Maritime women,
Jessica Magee (Smithtown, NY) led the way by sweeping the diving events. She scored 232.95 points on the 1-meter board and won the 3-meter competition with 210.75 points.
Mary Cirelli (Oreland, PA) placed third overall in the 100 backstroke (1:12.36) and fourth in the 200 yard individual medley (2:33.40).
Lauren Barriteau (Laurelton, NY) added a fourth-place showing in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 6:37.85.
Maritime will have more than a month off before its next competition. The Privateers will return to O'Hara Pool on Jan. 17 to take on both Merchant Marine and Mount St. Mary.
