Maritime Defeated By Salve Regina

NEWPORT, RI – After playing back-to-back home games, the Maritime College football team began a stretch of two straight on the road by visiting Salve Regina, the other new member of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference, on Saturday.  In the first meeting between the programs since 2008, the Seahawks (7-2, 5-1 NEWMAC) came away with a 49-0 victory over the Privateers (5-4, 3-3 NEWMAC) at Toppa Field.

The Privateers received the opening kickoff and put together a solid initial drive.  Maritime moved 58 yards in 12 plays before being stopped on fourth down at the Salve Regina 34.  The Seahawks then scored a touchdown on their opening drive.  After increasing its lead to 14-0, Salve Regina forced a fumble on the next Maritime possession and recovered it at the Privateers' 18 before finding the end zone again three plays later.

Salve Regina returned a blocked punt for a touchdown on the ensuing Maritime drive.  The Seahawks added three more second-quarter scores to make it 49-0 at halftime.  The Privateers moved to the Salve Regina 27 on their final drive, but Jaden Rotella's (Mt. Sinai, NY) pass was intercepted to complete the shutout.

As a team, Maritime was held to just 162 yards of total offense.  Steven Stassi (East Islip, NY) finished 15-for-22 passing for 95 yards, while Rotella was 3-for-5 for 47 yards and an interception.  Nate Casaburi (Sayville, NY) was the Privateers' leading receiver with seven catches for 73 yards, and Luke Caliendo (North Babylon, NY) gained 23 rushing yards on four carries.  Tim Gasparik (Seaford, NY) paced the Maritime defense with nine tackles.  Sergio Borda (Toms River, NJ), meanwhile, made six solo stops in his first game back after missing six weeks due to injury.

For the Seahawks, Jake Stack was 10-for-14 for 147 yards and two touchdowns.  Justan Luzzi and Thomas Cea, Jr., each scored twice on the ground, while Josh Letellier led Salve Regina with 64 receiving yards on four catches, one of which went for a touchdown.  Nick Bostrom tallied a team-high seven tackles for a Seahawks defense that recorded five sacks and forced two turnovers (in addition to the blocked punt).

Maritime concludes the season next Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Springfield (8-1, 6-0 NEWMAC).  The only previous meeting between the Privateers and Pride was a 17-14 Springfield victory in the 2018 New England Bowl.
