JAMAICA, NY – Prior to last Tuesday's contest at Medgar Evers, the Maritime College men's basketball team hadn't won a game by 30 points in a decade. The Privateers have now earned back-to-back victories by that margin. With its 80-50 triumph over York (1-4) at the Health & Physical Education Complex on Tuesday night, Maritime improved to 3-0 on the season for the first time this century.
After the Privateers jumped out to a 13-2 advantage barely five minutes into the game, the Cardinals responded with a 12-0 spurt to take the lead, 14-13.
Jake Cosgrove (Seaford, NY) sank a three on the other end before York knotted the score at 16-16 on Abdul Seck's layup midway through the first half. However, a layup by
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) at the 8:35 mark put Maritime back in front for good. The Privateers ended the half on a 19-7 run to take a 14-point cushion, 37-23, into the locker room.
Eleven straight points by
Jake Murphy (Rockville Centre, NY) highlighted a 20-6 Maritime rally over the first 7:32 of the second half that extended the margin to 57-29. Over the next 20 minutes of game time after it was tied at 16-16, the Privateers outscored the Cardinals 41-13.
York got back within 22 points at 70-48 before freshmen
Dylan Goodman (Syosset, NY),
Vadzim Paiko (Layton, UT) and
Cody Schanstra (Merrick, NY) combined for 10 straight points to give Maritime its biggest lead of the night, 80-48. The Cardinals made a late layup to cap the scoring in the Privateers' 80-50 win. This marks the first time since 2009-10 that Maritime has posted multiple 30-point wins in the same season, with the Privateers accomplishing the feat in consecutive road games.
Murphy notched career-highs with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) also grabbed nine boards to go along with six assists, while
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) finished with 15 points.
Evan Block (Seaford, NY), Begovic and Cosgrove added eight points apiece for the Privateers, who shot a combined 42 percent (29-of-69) from the field. Maritime was 13-for-34 (38.2 percent) from three-point land and 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) at the charity stripe.
For the Cardinals, Aidony Nivar led the way with 12 points, while Tyres Desinor tallied 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Olawale Kila, meanwhile, contributed 10 points and eight boards. As a team, York shot 31.4 percent (22-of-70) from the floor, 20 percent (3-of-15) from long range, and 60 percent (3-of-5) at the free throw line.
The Privateers, who have won their three games by an average of 27.7 points, will take part in the Sig Makofski Invitational at Union College this weekend. Maritime opens the tournament against Hartwick (0-4) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, then faces either Union (3-0) or Elms (2-4) on Sunday.
