THROGGS NECK, NY – Devon Etienne (Garden City, NY) was sensational in goal for the Maritime College women's soccer team on Wednesday. She made 11 saves, including one on a penalty kick, as the Privateers (5-4-1, 2-3-1 Skyline) played to a 0-0 draw against Manhattanville (4-3-2, 1-1-2 Skyline) at Reinhart Field. It was Maritime's first-ever result in eight all-time matchups with the Valiants.
In the 76
th minute,
Erin Hartill (Sound Beach, NY) was issued a yellow card for a foul in the box, giving Manhattanville a penalty kick. Natalie Aracena stepped up to the spot, but Etienne turned her attempt away. The rebound went right back to Aracena, and Etienne again made the stop from point-blank range. Etienne notched three more saves over the final 13 minutes to preserve the scoreless tie.
Manhattanville outshot Maritime 25-3 in the contest, with the Privateers' best scoring chance coming in the 65
th minute, when
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) took a corner kick and bent it on goal. In the 85
th minute,
Hannah Crown (Athens, NY) sent a high-arching blast from 30 yards out. The attempt sailed just over the crossbar, however, and the contest finished 0-0.
With the draw, Maritime snapped its three-game losing streak. Etienne (5-4-1), whose 11 saves matched her career high, was credited with her third shutout of the season. Manhattanville goalkeeper Macey Girard (4-3-2), meanwhile, recorded one save on the Morrill shot.
The Privateers will now have nearly a week off before returning to action. Maritime hosts Merchant Marine (2-4-1, 2-1-1 Skyline) at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. It will mark the first time the Privateers and Mariners meet at Reinhart Field.
