Maritime Swept at Mount St. Vincent

RIVERDALE, NY – Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) and Ashley Pavarini (Ossining, NY) each posted a double-double for the Maritime College volleyball team in its match at Mount St. Vincent on Tuesday night.  However, despite their efforts, the Privateers (7-14, 3-7 Skyline) dropped a 25-23, 26-24, 25-13 decision to the Dolphins (9-9, 5-4 Skyline) at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

Mele finished with 10 kills and 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.  Pavarini's double-double, her fourth this year to go along with one triple-double, consisted of 16 assists and 10 digs.  Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) paced the Privateers with 11 digs, while Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) tallied five kills, seven digs and three service aces.

Maritime jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set, but Mount St. Vincent rallied to trim its deficit to one, 13-12.  After the Privateers pushed the margin back to 19-16, the Dolphins scored four of the next five points to force a 20-20 deadlock.  It would be tied again at 21-21, 22-22 and 23-23 before Mount St. Vincent captured the last two points to take the set, 25-23.

In the second set, it was the Dolphins who took the early lead.  After Mount St. Vincent built a 9-4 cushion, Maritime went on an 11-5 spurt to go ahead, 15-14.  The Dolphins responded with a 9-2 run that gave them a 23-17 advantage, but the Privateers countered with a 5-0 run of their own to make it 23-22.  Maritime then tied the score at 24-24 on a block by Mele and Samantha Hart (Brooklyn, NY).  Mount St. Vincent won the next two points, however, to close out a 26-24 set win.

The Dolphins scored the first three points of the third set and quickly extended that advantage to 7-3.  A Pagano kill brought the Privateers within three, 9-6, before Mount St. Vincent used a 7-0 run to increase the margin to 10 points, 16-6.  Maritime claimed four of the next six points to trim its deficit to 18-10, but the Dolphins followed with a 7-3 rally to claim take the set, 25-13, and finish off the sweep.

Adelina Elejaz had a team-high 10 kills for the Dolphins.  Brianna Ayuso contributed 22 assists, nine digs and five aces, while Reilly Nichtern tallied seven kills, eight digs and four aces.  Isabella Garcia notched a match-best 12 digs for Mount St. Vincent.

There is one match remaining on Maritime's 2023 schedule.  The Privateers conclude the season by visiting Manhattanville (17-9, 10-0 Skyline) on Thursday at 6 p.m.
