THROGGS NECK, NY – After trailing by 10 at halftime, the Maritime College men's basketball team used a second half barrage to knock off Mount St. Vincent, 70-66, at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Privateers (11-9, 7-4 Skyline) shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the field and outscored the Dolphins (9-10, 6-5 Skyline) 46-32 over the final 20 minutes to remain unbeaten at home in conference play.
Mount St. Vincent held a 34-24 edge at the break, the Privateers came storming out of the gate in the second half. Dan Porcic sank a trey to extend the Dolphins' advantage to 39-28 with 17:58 remaining, but
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) drained a three-pointer on the other end to start a 12-0 Maritime run that put the Privateers in front, 40-39. After Dillon Hod's layup gave the lead back to Mount St. Vincent,
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) hit a jumper to spark another 8-0 spurt. On the strength of that 24-7 rally over the first 7:36 of the half, Maritime opened up a 48-41 cushion.
The Dolphins got back within two at 50-48 before
James O'Connell (East Williston, NY) and Donovan nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give the Privateers their biggest lead of the game, 56-48, with 7:27 left. Mount St. Vincent trimmed the margin to three points at 69-66 with three seconds to go, but, with the Dolphins forced to foul to stop the clock,
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to ice the 70-66 victory.
Donovan had 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. He also pulled down six rebounds.
Robbie Mitchell (Staten Island, NY) finished with 15 points, while Noble tallied 13 points and seven boards. Begovic grabbed 10 rebounds, and
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) notched six assists and three steals. The Privateers shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the floor overall and outrebounded the Dolphins 38-28. Maritime was 7-for-24 (29.2 percent) from three-point land and 78.9 percent (15-of-19) at the charity stripe.
In the first half, it was Mount St. Vincent that used hot shooting to take the lead. The Dolphins opened up a 19-12 advantage midway through the period, then, after Maritime got within four at 23-19, scored 11 of the next 14 points to extend their cushion to 34-22 with 1:46 left until halftime. Mitchell drove for a layup to close out the half, trimming the margin to 10 points, 34-24, at intermission.
Four Dolphins reached double-figures in the scoring column, led by Joshua Cabezudo's 19 points. He added five rebounds, three assists and three steals. DJ Tucker finished with 15 points, six boards and four assists, while Porcic contributed 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Hod recorded 11 points of his own. As a team, Mount St. Vincent shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) overall, including 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from long range. The Dolphins were just 4-for-12 (33.3 percent) at the free throw line.
On Saturday, the Privateers welcome Manhattanville (14-5, 7-3 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. matchup. The Valiants won the first meeting between the teams, 59-48, on Dec. 7.
