THROGGS NECK, NY – Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) went 8-for-9 from three-point range and finished with a career-high 33 points, the most by a Maritime men's basketball player in 10 years, on Wednesday night, as the Privateers (7-7, 3-2 Skyline) earned a 77-73 overtime win against Sarah Lawrence (4-10, 2-3 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium. As a team, Maritime drained 13 treys in the game, tying the program record.
Noble's 33 points were the fourth-most for a single game dating back to 2004-05, when full records became available. It was the highest output by a Privateer since T'Vaughn Gibson had a program-record 36 points on Nov. 15, 2013, also against Sarah Lawrence. With his eight treys, meanwhile, Noble equaled the all-time program single-game mark held by Tim Hoch (Dec. 3, 2016) and Brendan McGovern (Jan. 10, 2019).
Maritime's three-point barrage started in the first half, as the Privateers drained five of their first seven attempts from long range. Those treys helped Maritime build a 23-7 advantage with 11:36 remaining until halftime. The Privateers' lead reached a game-high 19 points at 39-20 with 3:05 left in the half before Sarah Lawrence scored the final five points of the period to trim the margin to 14 points, 39-25, at the break.
Sarah Lawrence then started the second half on a 6-0 run to pull within eight, 39-31. After the Privateers pushed their cushion back to 14 points at 51-37, the Gryphons rattled off 14 of the next 15 points to make it a one-point game, 52-51, with 6:13 to go. A Noble three brought the margin back to four points, 55-51, before Sarah Lawrence rallied to take a 59-57 lead with 2:53 left.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) sank a trey to put the Privateers back in front, 60-59, before Lucas Murray's layup gave the lead back to Sarah Lawrence with 57 seconds remaining. Anderson was fouled on the other end and hit both free throws to once again give Maritime the lead, 62-61.
Murray was fouled with seven seconds left and nailed the first free throw to tie the score. He missed the second, however, and the Gryphons grabbed the offensive rebound.
Ryan Donovan (North Salem, NY) stole the ball, though, and found a wide-open
Robbie Mitchell (Staten Island, NY), whose layup at the buzzer was just off the mark. Donovan tipped it in, but after the horn sounded, and the contest went to overtime.
In the extra session, the Privateers got five quick points from Noble to regain a lead they would not relinquish. A Donovan layup made it 75-67 with 1:29 left, but Sarah Lawrence again battled back. The Gryphons pulled within four at 77-73 with six seconds remaining, then Maritime turned it back over to Sarah Lawrence. Braden Burman's last-second trey was off the mark, though, and the Privateers held on for their first overtime victory since last season's 97-90 win at Purchase.
Donovan finished with 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Anderson had 14 points and six boards to go along with six assists. Mitchell registered nine points and four assists, and
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) secured six rebounds. The Privateers shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, including 75 percent (3-of-4) in the overtime period. Maritime made both of its three-point attempts in the extra session, part of a 40.6 percent (13-of-32) shooting night from downtown. Despite going just 18-for-26 (69.2 percent) at the line for the game, the Privateers clinched the win with a 7-for-8 (87.5 percent) performance in overtime.
For Sarah Lawrence, Chris Dougherty had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. He also recorded four blocks. Murray pulled down eight boards to go along with a team-best 17 points, while Eamon Kelly contributed 14 points. Justin DiFabio added 12 points, and Amos Grey distributed four assists. The Gryphons shot 37.7 percent (26-of-69) from the floor and 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from long range, but were just 13-for-23 (56.5 percent) at the charity stripe. Sarah Lawrence outrebounded Maritime 52-36.
The Privateers have now won two straight and four out of five. Maritime concludes a three-game homestand on Saturday, when St. Joseph's Brooklyn (4-10, 1-4 Skyline) visits Riesenberg Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
