BROOKLYN, NY – After falling to Mount St. Vincent in a tight three-setter on Wednesday, the Maritime College volleyball team was right back in action on Thursday night. Playing in their first road match of the season, the Privateers (2-2) earned an easy 25-11, 25-17, 25-19 victory Medgar Evers (1-8) at the Cougars Cave.
Maritime scored four of the first five points and extended its cushion to 11-3 after a run of three straight service aces by
Carolina Bersani (Bronx, NY). A
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) ace made it 23-8, and the Privateers took the first set by a 25-11 margin.
In the second set, the Privateers opened up an 18-7 lead before Medgar Evers rattled off five straight points to cut its deficit to four, 18-12. After the teams traded two-point runs, Maritime scored the next three points to go up 23-14. A Kirchner kill brought the Privateers to set point, and
Samantha Hart (Brooklyn, NY) slammed a kill to finish off the 25-17 win that gave Maritime a 2-0 lead in the match.
It was more of the same in the third set, as Maritime jumped out to a 10-3 advantage. The Cougars got back within 12-7 before the Privateers used a 7-0 run to extend the margin to 12 points, 19-7. Medgar Evers responded, however, going on an 8-0 rally of its own to pull within 19-15. Maritime reached match point on a
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) kill, and she put another one away to close out the third set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) paced the Privateers with 12 kills on .375 hitting. Mele had six kills to go along with a team-high seven digs, while Kirchner
finished with 22 assists and five aces. Bersani added six aces and
Kelly Kuhn (Lansdale, PA) served four aces, as Maritime collected 20 aces as a team. The Privateers hit a combined .129 (30 kills, 19 errors, 85 attempts) in the match.
Medgar Evers had just four kills as a team, two of which came from Cristal Joseph. She also tallied three aces. Quiara Brye Bey posted a match-high 10 digs, and Britonya Lloyd registered eight digs. Overall, the Cougars outdug the Maritime 33-22.
The Privateers hit the road again on Monday, when they visit Brooklyn (6-4) at 6 p.m. It will be the start of a span in which Maritime plays seven matches in 10 days.
