Privateers Pick Up Second Straight Conference Win

THROGGS NECK, NY – For the first time in program history, the Maritime College women's soccer team has won its first two Skyline Conference games.  Sara Williams (Oceanside, NY) scored the game-winner in the 57th minute, as the Privateers (3-3-0, 2-0-0 Skyline) topped Purchase (3-2-0, 1-2-0 Skyline) by a 3-2 count at Reinhart Field on Friday night.

A flurry of Maritime shots led to the game-winner.  After Hannah Crown (Athens, NY) put one wide, Courtney Curley (Rochester, NY) had a pair of point-blank attempts saved.  Erin Hartill (Sound Beach, NY) then saw her shot blocked directly back to her, then sent a pass into the box for Courtney Curley (Rochester, NY).  Curley saw Williams free along the near post, and she headed it home for her first collegiate goal.

There was also an early offensive flurry, as both teams scored within the first seven minutes of the contest.  Purchase got on the board just four minutes in, when Kristen Purcell fired a blast past Maritime goalkeeper Alessia Muccitelli (Shrub Oak, NY).  The Privateers quickly responded, though.  Anya Josberger (Coxsackie, NY) settled a ball inside the box and found Curley on the left side.  Her strike went into the upper corner of the net, knotting the game at 1-1.

Purchase regained the lead on Purcell's second goal of the night in the 16th minute.  However, Maritime again found an equalizer.  After a foul in the box, Josberger stepped up to take the penalty kick.  She banged it off the crossbar and in, evening the score at 2-2 in the 26th minute.

Josberger and Curley each finished with a goal and an assist for Maritime, which outshot Purchase 28-11, including a 14-7 edge in shots on goal.  Goalkeeper Carolyn Hough (2-2-0) was credited with 11 saves for the Panthers.  Muccitelli (1-0-0), meanwhile, made her first career start in net and earned the victory after tallying five saves.

On Wednesday, the Privateers conclude a four-game homestand with a 7 p.m. matchup against St. Joseph's LI (3-1-2, 3-0-0 Skyline).
