Privateers Use Big Second Half to Topple Yeshiva

PURCHASE, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team opened Skyline Conference play with a matchup against Yeshiva on Tuesday night.  The game was tied 1-1 at halftime before the Privateers (2-2-0, 1-0-0 Skyline) erupted for five second-half goals to notch a 6-1 victory over the Maccabees (0-6-0, 0-5-0 Skyline) at Purchase College Soccer Field.

Maritime had a couple of early chances before finally breaking through in the 13th minute.  Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) took a corner kick that found the foot of Erin Hartill (Sound Beach, NY), who tipped it in for the game's first goal.  The Privateers outshot the Maccabees 16-4 in the first half, but Yeshiva goalkeeper Sophie Dubin made seven saves to keep the score 1-0.  Yeshiva then tied it on Yuval Nitzan's goal in the 34th minute.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) broke the tie when she found the back of the net after a scramble in the box.  Maritime then scored two goals in less than a minute to increase its cushion to 4-1.  Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) netted the first off an assist from Courtney Curley (Rochester, NY) before assisting on Sandford's second tally of the night.  Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) made it 5-1 in the 79th minute, and Ford capped the scoring with a blast from the left wing in the 87th minute.

Ford had six points in the contest, finishing with two goals and two assists.  She has a team-high five goals on the season.  Sandford, meanwhile, scored twice in a game for the second time this year.  Goalkeeper Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (1-2-0) was credited with four saves in the winning effort.

Duben (0-1-0) made 11 saves for the Maccabees, who were outshot 38-9.  Nitzan had eight of those shots, including the only Yeshiva goal, which was assisted by Anjelica Feig.

After playing two straight on the road, Maritime returns to Reinhart Field on Saturday for a non-conference tilt against Bard (1-2-1) at 12 p.m.  It will be the start of a four-game homestand for the Privateers.
