Privateers Defeated By Stevens In NCAA Tournament

HOBOKEN, NJ – On Wednesday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team made its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  The Privateers (11-8) took on Stevens in the first round, but saw their season come to an end, as the Ducks (13-7) advanced to the second round with a 16-8 victory at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

After Stevens scored the first goal of the game, Sean Foley (Long Beach, NY) tied it with 5:52 left in the first quarter.  The Ducks responded with four straight goals, though, to open up a 5-1 advantage.

"I thought we had some nerves at the start," Head Coach Justin Manjares said.  "We had some turnovers and they (Stevens) just capitalized on them."

Maritime countered with three tallies of its own to start the second quarter, as Parker Reilly (West Islip, NY) found the back of the net, then John Killcommons (Garden City, NY) scored twice in just over a minute to bring the Privateers within 5-4.  However, the Ducks rattled off the next five goals to push the margin to six, 10-4, before Killcommons made it a 10-5 game at halftime.

Stevens extended its lead to 13-5 midway through the third quarter, but Maritime scored three of the next four goals to again get within six, 14-8.  The Privateers would get no closer, though, as Stevens notched a 16-8 triumph to move on to a matchup with No. 7 Dickinson.

Killcommons paced the Privateers with three goals, while Reilly's goal was his team-leading 38th of the season.  Connor Tomich (Sayville, NY) finished with four assists, including three in the second quarter.  Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY), meanwhile, collected a game-high eight ground balls.  Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) (9-2) made 17 saves in his first loss since April 2.

Four different Ducks had hat tricks, with Michael Burns and Mikey Whiteside each adding two assists, as well.  Jack Savarese and Ryan Caplis also scored three times.  Bryan Creamer picked up a team-best six ground balls, while Russell Eberding and Craig Stockfeder recorded five ground balls apiece.  Stevens went 22-for-27 on faceoffs and had a 45-35 edge in ground balls.  Jake Zeyher (11-7) earned the win after notching four saves.

The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Privateers, who went undefeated against Skyline Conference opponents en route to a third straight Skyline title.
