NEWBURGH, NY – The Maritime College baseball team entered its final road doubleheader of the season on Saturday knowing that a split would secure the Privateers a place in the Skyline Conference Tournament. Maritime was swept in the twinbill, however, dropping an 11-5 decision in game one before falling, 7-6, in 10 innings to host Mount St. Mary (14-17, 9-9 Skyline) at the MSMC Baseball Complex.
Maritime got off to a good start in game one, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY) led off the game with a double to left, then
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) crushed his league-leading seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot to left. After a one-out single by
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA),
Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, NY) ripped an RBI double to center.
It remained that way until the bottom of the third, when Mount St. Mary pulled within 3-2 on Dominick Marzigliano's RBI single and Brandon Nolasco's bases-loaded walk. The Knights then put up five runs in the fourth, with Jack Goodwin roping a two-run double and Marzigliano following with a three-run homer. Mount St. Mary added four more in the fifth to make it an 11-3 game.
Austen Bishop (Millersville, MD) started the sixth inning with a base hit and took third on Mosca's double.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) was up next, and he ripped a single to left that drove in Bishop. Mosca scored on
Anthony Madigan's (Greenlawn, NY) infield single, then Maritime's fifth consecutive hit to start the inning—a single by
Danny Green (Belle Harbor, NY)—loaded the bases with nobody out. A popup and a double play ended the inning, however, before the Privateers went down quietly in the seventh, as Mount St. Mary held on for the 11-5 win.
Mosca was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Bishop also had two hits, while Forgione went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Starting pitcher
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) (3-3) took the loss after surrendering seven runs on nine hits over four innings. He struck out four and walked two.
For the Knights, Anthony Franco finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, and Goodwin was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Marzigliano, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Matthew Borriello (6-2) earned the win after holding the Privateers to five runs on nine hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out two. Michael Di Tullio pitched the final two innings, yielding just one hit while striking out two and walking one.
In game two, the Privateers again jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. After Mount St. Mary responded with a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning, Maritime went back in front on
Ryan Rockhill's (Eastchester, NY) two-run single in the second. Mosca made it 5-3 with an RBI double in the top of the third, but he was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play. The Privateers picked up another run in the seventh when
Patrick Bartoletta (Plainview, NY) scored on Bishop's two-out RBI single.
However, the Knights scored three times in the bottom of the seventh. Marzigliano knocked in one with a single to center, and Nolasco tied the game with a two-run single to left.
Neither team was able to push one across in either the eighth or the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings. Martinson singled leading off the top of the 10
th, but was erased on a double play. Mount St. Mary's Ryan Lutinski then opened the bottom of the 10
th with a single. After a sacrifice bunt, an error and a walk, Franco singled to left, giving the Knights the 7-6 walk-off win.
Rockhill had three of Maritime's nine hits in the game. He drove in two runs and scored one. Martinson also finished with two hits, while Bishop knocked in a pair and Bartoletta crossed the plate twice.
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) started on the mound and went 6.2 innings. He allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits, struck out three and walked two.
Eric Wenig (Simi Valley, CA) (0-2) took the loss after surrendering two hits and one unearned run in 2.2 innings. He recorded two strikeouts and two walks.
Mount St. Mary finished with 11 hits, including three each by Franco and Lutinski. Franco also scored twice to go along with the game-winning RBI. Goodwin and Marzigliano added two runs apiece, and Nolaso recorded two RBIs. Starting pitcher Mike Scotto went the first 2.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks. After Liam Horan and Anthony Caminitti held the Privateers to one run and three hits over the next 5.2 innings, Michael Di Tullio (2-0) tossed the final two innings and earned the win. He yielded just one hit and one walk.
On Sunday, the Privateers will conclude the regular season by hosting Purchase (11-21, 7-11 Skyline) at Reinhart Baseball Field. Maritime, which will honor its 10-member senior class before the 12 p.m. doubleheader, can guarantee its spot in the Skyline Tournament with a sweep or a combination of one win and other results around the league.
