Santeramo, Privateers Secure Split With Merchant Marine

THROGGS NECK, NY – Pitching was on full display in the Maritime College baseball team's doubleheader with Merchant Marine at Reinhart Baseball Field on Sunday.  Game one went to 12 innings before the Mariners (14-13, 7-3 Skyline) came away with a 2-1 victory.  Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) then threw just 67 pitches in the nightcap, as Maritime (17-7, 9-3 Skyline) earned a 3-2 win to split the twinbill.

In game one, Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, NY) led off the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line.  After Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY) was intentionally walked to set up the double play.  However, Merchant Marine only had one play at first on Freddy Forgione's (Ronkonkoma, NY) ground ball to short, allowing Mosca to score the first run of the contest.

Merchant Marine put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the fourth, but Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, NY) got a ground ball and a line drive to end the threat.  He then worked around a leadoff single in the fifth, striking out the next three batters.

It was still a 1-0 game in the top of the seventh when Merchant Marine's Jack Millen reached on an error with one out.  After a fly out, Garrett Clapsaddle singled to left and the Privateers tried to cut down the runner at third.  Millen was called safe, however, and he scored the tying run on Brice Garner's double that was just fair over third base.

After the Privateers failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, the contest was extended to a nine-inning game.  Maritime again had a chance to win in the bottom of the ninth, but Forgione struck out with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Neither side was able to push a run across in the 10th or 11th, pushing the game into the 12th inning, Maritime's longest since a 13-inning tilt with Mount St. Vincent on March 31, 2019.  In the top of the 12th, Merchant Marine played small ball, getting a bunt single and a sacrifice after a leadoff base hit.  Clapsaddle then dropped a bunt down the first base line and Chambers came across with the go-ahead run on the squeeze play.  The Privateers runners on first and second in the bottom half of the inning, but Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) flied to right for the final out in the 2-1 Merchant Marine victory.

Sullivan went 10 innings on the mound, holding the Mariners to just one unearned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.  Eric Wenig (Simi Valley, CA) took the loss after allowing one run on four hits in two innings.  He struck out two.

For Merchant Marine, starting pitcher Kole Register lasted 8.2 innings.  He surrendered one run on seven hits, struck out three and walked four.  Tommy Payton didn't give up a hit over 1.1 innings.  He issued one walk and was credited with one strikeout.  Andrew Dreyfuss (1-0) earned the win after yielding just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in two innings.

The Mariners immediately got on the board in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first.  After Joey Zanetti singled to start the game and Tyler Reistetter reached on an error, Noah Herdman gave Merchant Marine a 1-0 lead with a single to right center.  Another run came across when Travis Leatherwood grounded into a double play.

Maritime got one of those runs back without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first.  Shea and Zurita both walked, and the runners moved to second and third on Forgione's groundout.  They were still there when Jake Bernardi (Bronx, NY) struck out.  However, the pitch got away and rolled to the backstop, allowing Shea to come across and trim the Mariners' lead to 2-1.

Bernardi tied the game in his next at-bat when he smacked a double to left that drove in Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA).  The Privateers then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Forgione walked and Martinson singled before the runners advanced on Bernardi's groundout.  Forgione hustled home on another wild pitch, putting Maritime in front 3-2.

Santeramo took it from there.  He allowed just one hit after the first inning, a two-out single by Jared Johnson in the fourth.  Santeramo (5-0) retired the last 10 Mariners he faced after that to finish off his fourth consecutive complete game victory.  He finished with five strikeouts and didn't walk a batter, and both Merchant Marine runs were unearned.

Jacob Syversen (3-3) was nearly as good on the mound for the Mariners.  He also threw a complete game, yielding three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking four.

On Thursday, the Privateers will play a split doubleheader against Mount St. Vincent (15-10, 5-5 Skyline).  The first game gets underway at 3 p.m., while game two is scheduled for 7 p.m.  The twinbill will take place at Reinhart Baseball Field, but will be considered Mount St. Vincent's home games.
