Privateers Begin Maritime Cup With Easy Win Over Mass Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, MA – For the second time in as many games to open the season, the Maritime College women's lacrosse team had a dominant offensive performance on Friday evening.  The Privateers (2-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and shut out Mass Maritime over the final three quarters in a 14-1 victory over the Buccaneers (1-1) at Clean Harbors in the opener of the Maritime Cup.

Jenna Lesiewicz (Wading River, NY) opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest, and Sara Wright (East Islip, NY), Gabrielle Nicolosi (West Islip, NY) and Sarah Malone (Calvert County, MD) added goals before Mass Maritime got on the board with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter.  That would be the Buccaneers' only tally, however, as the Privateer defense held Mass Maritime scoreless the rest of the way.

Maritime increased its lead to 8-1 at halftime, then added four more goals in the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter, Nicolosi found the back of the net for the fourth time on the night before Avery Jillson Neuwirth (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) capped the scoring in the 14-1 victory.

Through two games this season, the Privateers have outscored their opponents 33-3.  Nicolosi picked up a game-high five ground balls to go along with her four goals, while Wright recorded six points with three goals and three assists.  She was also credited with four draw controls.  Lesiewicz finished with three goals and an assist, and Jillson Neuwirth contributed five points on two goals and three assists.  Malone, meanwhile, registered two goals and two assists.

The Privateers outshot the Buccaneers 41-10, including a 26-6 edge in shots on goal.  Goalkeeper Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) (2-0) stopped five Mass Maritime shots.

In addition to scoring Mass Maritime's only goal, Alyssa DiScipio controlled five draws.  Paige Albertson and Aviva Beringhause led the Buccaneers with three ground balls apiece, while Beringhause (1-1) made 12 saves in goal.

On Saturday, the Privateers conclude the Maritime Cup with a 2 p.m. contest against Maine Maritime (0-3).  That contest will also be played at Mass Maritime's Clean Harbors.
