THROGGS NECK, NY – One week shutting down Baruch in a doubleheader sweep,
Frank Santeramo (Garden City, NY) and
Matthew Demme (Carmel, NY) of the Maritime College baseball team did it again on Sunday. Santeramo threw a three-hit shutout in the opener, a 5-0 victory, while Demme gave up just one run over six innings in game two, as Maritime (12-4, 4-0 Skyline) earned an 11-1 win to complete the sweep in a twinbill against Old Westbury (4-12, 2-4 Skyline) at Reinhart Baseball Field.
Two of Old Westbury's three hits in game one came in the first inning. Santeramo induced a groundout and a popup to get out of the jam, however. Maritime then scored twice in the bottom half of the inning. Following a leadoff error,
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, NY) and
Freddy Forgione (Ronkonkoma, NY) ripped back-to-back singles to put the Privateers in front 1-0.
Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY) added a two-out RBI single that doubled Maritime's lead.
After the Panthers left two runners on base again in the top of the second,
Logan Martinson (Sumner, WA) led off the bottom half of the inning with his first collegiate home run, a blast to left field. That was more than enough offense for Santeramo, who allowed a leadoff single in the third, but promptly saw the runner erased on a double play.
Maritime added to its lead with a pair in the bottom of the fifth.
Jaden Shea (Severn, MD) came up with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run single to right center. Santeramo (3-0) set the Panthers down in order in the sixth, then worked around a walk in the seventh to clinch his first career shutout. He struck out five and walked four in the victory.
Justin Aviles (1-3) went five innings for Old Westbury, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks. Frank Whitenack struck out one and walked one in a scoreless bottom of the sixth. Zurita, meanwhile, scored twice for the Privateers.
In game two, Maritime took advantage of an Old Westbury error to plate two runs in the bottom of the second. Forgione then lifted a sacrifice fly in the third that made it 3-0 in favor of the Privateers. He hit another sacrifice fly as part of a three-run fifth, after which there was a 12-minute weather delay.
Old Westbury got on the board in the top of the sixth, but Maritime responded with three unearned tallies in the bottom half of the inning. After another weather delay, the Privateers plated two in the seventh.
Nick Pinggera's (Kings Park, NY) single brought home
Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, NY) with the run that made it 11-1, allowing Maritime to walk off with its second straight sweep to start conference play.
Pinggera, Zurita, Shea and
Anthony Madigan (Greenlawn, NY) all scored twice in the game, while Forgione was credited with three RBIs. Martinson, meanwhile, had two of Maritime's five hits in the contest. Demme (3-1) gave up one run on four hits, struck out five and walked two before being relieved by
Haydn Strycharz (Pittstown, NJ), who recorded one strikeout in the seventh.
For Old Westbury, Jacob Ford finished 2-for-3 and Oscar Fajardo went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Eddie Guzman (1-1) took the loss after yielding six runs (one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 4.2 innings. Joshua Cruz pitched the final 1.1 innings, surrendering five runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, when St. Joseph's Brooklyn (2-9, 0-2 Skyline) visits Reinhart Baseball Field for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
