THROGGS NECK, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime College men's lacrosse team welcomed Oneonta to Reinhart Field. The Privateers (1-1) scored the first goal of the contest, and the game was tied 2-2 midway through the first quarter before the Red Dragons (1-1) pulled away for a 13-6 victory.
After
Steven Pinto (Oakdale, NY) found the back of the net for the fifth time this season just 1:31 into the game, Oneonta responded with two straight to take the lead. However, a goal by
Jason Corvi (Smithtown, NY) at the 7:10 mark of the first quarter evened the score at 2-2. The Red Dragons scored two goals late in the period, though, to go back in front, 4-2.
Oneonta increased its cushion to 7-3 at halftime, then outscored Maritime 5-2 in the third quarter to make it 12-5. Each team scored once in the fourth quarter.
Pinto and
Patrick Schnell (Jericho, NY) scored two goals apiece, while
Kieran Hendry (East Northport, NY) had a goal to go along with a team-high four ground balls.
Joe Kiernan (Northport, NY) and
Payton Stump (East Meadow, NY) both collected three ground balls.
Jack Daresta (Massapequa, NY) (1-1) got the start in net and made seven saves.
Michael Monahan (Ronkonkoma, NY) finished up and was credited with one save.
Dean Cannon recorded five points for the Red Dragons with three goals and two assists. Kieran Rowley also had a hat trick, while Connor Gallagher added a pair of tallies. Stephen Barikyan tallied a game-high five ground balls, as Oneonta held a 29-23 edge in that category. In addition to picking up four ground balls, Luke Mignoli (1-1) recorded 10 saves in the win.
Maritime now has a week off before returning to action. The Privateers welcome Salve Regina (0-0) to Reinhart Field next Saturday at 1 p.m.
