NEW YORK – In its most complete offensive performance of the season, the Maritime College men's basketball team (3-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominant 78-51 win over John Jay (0-7) at the Doghouse on Tuesday night. The Privateers led nearly wire-to-wire and set season-highs for field goals (33), field goal percentage (.541) and assists (20) in the victory.
Four different Privateers reached double-figures in the scoring column, led by
Ryan Donovan's (New Salem, NY) 25 points. He also had six rebounds and four assists.
Aleksandar Begovic (Kotor, Montenegro) went 7-for-7 from the field and finished with 14 points and 11 boards for his first career double-double.
Robbie Mitchell (Richmond, NY) tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while
Theo Noble (Bronx, NY) contributed 13 points and six boards.
Tyler Anderson (Smithtown, NY) recorded seven assists and three blocks to go along with seven points.
Maritime was 33-for-61 (54.1 percent) from the field and outrebounded John Jay 47-26. The Privateers shot 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) at the free throw line.
After John Jay scored the first bucket of the game, Mitchell drained a trey to start an 11-0 Maritime run that put the Privateers ahead for good. The Bloodhounds responded with a 10-2 spurt to pull within one at 13-12, but Noble sank a layup on the other end to spark another 9-0 Maritime rally that made it 22-12 with 8:18 left in the first half. The margin reached 20 points at 39-19 on a Donovan three-pointer at the 1:22 mark, and the Privateers held a 39-21 edge at the break. Donovan had 18 first-half points.
John Jay opened the second half by notching six of the first eight points to cut its deficit to 41-26, but that's as close as the Bloodhounds would get. An Anderson layup started a 20-10 run that made the lead 25 points, 61-36, with 8:25 remaining. The advantage reached a game-high 33 points when Begovic capped his perfect shooting night with a layup that made it 77-44 with 2:18 to go. The final margin was 27 points, 78-51, marking Maritime's largest win since a 93-66 triumph over Alfred State on Nov. 21, 2014.
Isaac Holmes and Jayson Delgado paced John Jay with eight points apiece, while Garrison Watkins and Jamir Stewart each posted seven points. Corey Jones, Jr., grabbed a team-best five rebounds for the Bloodhounds, who shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the floor, 20 percent (4-of-20) from downtown, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) at the charity stripe.
This was Maritime's final game before the start of Skyline play. The Privateers' conference opener will be a 12 p.m. matchup at Purchase (2-3, 0-1 Skyline) on Saturday.
