THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College football team honored its 13-member senior class prior to Saturday afternoon's season finale against Alfred State. The Privateers (3-7, 2-4 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference) were unable to send their seniors out with a victory, however, as Alfred State (5-5, 3-3 ECFC) scored five first half touchdowns en route to a 48-21 win at Reinhart Field.
After the Pioneers marched 66 yards in 10 plays for a TD on their first possession, the Privateers put together an impressive opening drive of its own. However,
Aidan Nunez's (Carmel, NY) pass was intercepted in the end zone and Maritime came away with no points. The Privateers forced a punt on the next Alfred State possession, but fumbled and the Pioneers recovered. The Pioneers took advantage of the short field for its second touchdown of the first quarter.
Alfred State extended its lead to 28-0 before Nunez connected with
Ian Derda (Guilford, CT) for a 23-yard catch and run that got Maritime on the scoreboard. The Pioneers responded with another touchdown to make it a 35-7 game at halftime.
Nunez found Derda again, this time from 33 yards out, to cap a six-play, 81-yard march with 5:00 left in the third quarter. Alfred State immediately countered, though, as Jake Palmer ran it in from 28 yards out.
With 6:15 remaining in the contest,
Dru Stephens (New Orleans, LA) forced a fumble that he recovered at the Alfred State 30, setting up the offense for another scoring drive. Nunez was nearly sacked on a 1
st-and-goal from the Alfred State 10, but managed to get away and find
Nick Campo (Staten Island, NY) in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Palmer then recorded his fourth rushing TD of the day to cap the scoring in the Pioneers' 48-21 victory.
Despite seeing his touchdown streak end,
Tate Neiderer (Hanover, PA) had another big game running the football for Maritime. He finished with 169 yards on 24 carries. Nunez was 21-for-36 passing for 260 yards and three TDs, while Derda collected 135 receiving yards on seven catches, two of which went for scores.
Kevin Wu (Staten Island, NY) paced the defense with 13 tackles, and
Tim Gasparik (Seaford, NY) added 10 tackles, including two tackles for loss.
For Alfred State, which had more than 500 yards of total offense, including 327 on the ground, Palmer carried 37 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns. Josh Graham gained 70 rushing yards on six carries, and he also scored a touchdown. Quarterback Justin Horvath went 12-for-23 for 218 yards and two scores, one of which went to Ben Ba, who hauled in a team-high four passes for 60 total yards.
Danny Browning and Jeremiah Nixon each made nine tackles for Alfred State. Nixon was also credited with a sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Max Gomes, meanwhile, intercepted Nunez twice.
This was Maritime's final game as a member of the ECFC. Next season, the Privateers will begin play in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
