PURCHASE, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team gave first-place Manhattanville all it could handle on Friday afternoon. It was a 2-0 game until the Valiants (5-6-1, 5-1-0 Skyline) scored a pair of late goals to notch a 4-0 win over the Privateers (3-7-0, 2-4-0 Skyline) at GoValiants.com Field.
Kelly Barrera gave Manhattanville a 1-0 lead in the 15
th minute, when she got free on a breakaway and put one past
Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ). The Valiants continued to pepper Commodore, attempting nine shots in the first half, but the Maritime goalkeeper was up to the task. Commodore made three first-half saves to keep it 1-0.
Barrera scored again early in the second half, but the Maritime defense continued to play tight. After
Ava Morrill (New Windsor, NY) nearly put the Privateers on the board in the 76
th minute, the Valiants' Morgan Passley found the back of the net twice in the final 10 minutes to close out the 4-0 victory.
Commodore (1-4-0) was credited with four saves in a losing effort. Manhattanville goalkeeper Macey Girard (5-6-1), meanwhile, stopped both shots she faced. Barrera was involved in all four of the Valiants' goals, scoring twice and assisting on both of Passley's tallies.
Maritime was originally scheduled to conclude non-conference play by hosting CCNY at 11 a.m. on Monday. However, that game has been postponed. The Privateers will now return to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Kings Point at 3:30 p.m. for their first-ever meeting with Merchant Marine (5-4-1, 0-4-1 Skyline).
