THROGGS NECK, NY – Over the course of two days more than three weeks apart, the Maritime College women's soccer team played perhaps its best game of the season. The Privateers trailed Farmingdale 1-0 when the game was suspended on Sept. 20. The contest concluded on Friday at Reinhart Field, but neither team scored over the final 24 minutes, and the Rams (7-8-1, 7-0-0 Skyline) finished off their 1-0 victory over Maritime (3-8-0, 2-5-0 Skyline).
Back on Sept. 20, the Privateers had an outstanding defensive first half. Despite being outshot 11-1 in the period, the game was scoreless at halftime, as
Liz Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) made five first-half saves, including three in rapid succession. However, she suffered a season-ending injury early in the second half, forcing an emergency goalkeeping appearance by
Alessia Muccitelli (Shrub Oak, NY). Muccitelli stopped the first shot she saw before yielding a goal on a penalty kick in the 50
th minute.
In the 66
th minute, a serious injury to a Farmingdale player resulted in the remainder of the game being postponed. Play picked back up on Friday afternoon, and the Privateers continued their strong effort.
Maritime nearly tied the game in the 78
th minute when
Courtney Curley's (Rochester, NY) shot hit the bottom of the crossbar. The rebound went to
Erin Hartill (Sound Beach, NY), but her attempt was saved. The Privateers had another scoring opportunity in the final minute. Farmingdale goalkeeper Lindsey Jolly made the save on
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY), though, to secure the 1-0 victory for the Rams.
Farmingdale outshot Maritime 23-5, with the trio of Pomaro, Muccitelli and
Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) combining for seven saves. Muccitelli (1-1-0) was tagged with the loss after allowing the game's only goal on a Julissa Martinez penalty kick. Jolly (4-1-0), meanwhile, was credited with two saves.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, when they visit Merchant Marine (6-5-1, 1-5-1 Skyline) at 3:30 p.m. It will be Maritime's first-ever meeting with the Mariners, who are in their first year as a varsity program.
