Maritime Drops Road Match at St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, NY – After playing four straight at home, the Maritime College volleyball team hit the road for the only time in a seven-match stretch on Monday night.  The Privateers (2-8, 1-4 Skyline) traveled to St. Joseph's Brooklyn, where they dropped a 25-19, 25-11, 25-19 decision to the host Bears (4-7, 3-1 Skyline) at the Hill Center.

Maritime scored three of the first four points before St. Joseph's Brooklyn responded with a 5-0 run to open up a 6-3 lead.  The Bears extended their advantage to 13-5, but the Privateers countered with a 4-1 spurt to pull within 14-9.  Maritime would get no closer, though, as St. Joseph's Brooklyn captured the set by a 25-19 count.

In the second set, St. Joseph's Brooklyn built an early 7-1 cushion and never looked back.  The Bears won the set, 25-11, to go up 2-0 in the match.

St. Joseph's Brooklyn took another early lead in the third set, jumping out to an 8-2 cushion.  After the Bears pushed the margin to seven at 12-5, the Privateers used a 9-4 rally to trim their deficit to two, 16-14.  However, St. Joseph's Brooklyn rattled off five of the next seven points to regain a five-point advantage, 21-16, and the Bears finished off the sweep by claiming a 25-19 set win.

Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) had a double-double for the Privateers, finishing with 15 assists and 11 digs.  Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) just missed a double-double of her own with nine kills and a team-best 13 digs.  Carolina Bersani (Bronx, NY), meanwhile, tallied 12 digs.

Autumn Poppett led the Bears with six kills, while Martina Urgo posted five kills, five service aces and nine digs.  Rachel Meltsin distributed 17 assists to go along with four digs, and Carol Melo recorded a match-high 16 digs.  As a team, St. Joseph's Brooklyn hit .122 (25 kills, 14 errors, 90 attempts) in the match.

The Privateers return home on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tilt with Sarah Lawrence (10-5, 3-0 Skyline).  It will be Maritime's second matchup with the Gryphons at Riesenberg Gymnasium in five days.  Sarah Lawrence earned a 3-0 victory when the sides met on Saturday.
