Privateers Stopped By Gryphons For Second Time This Season

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Friday afternoon, the Maritime College volleyball team welcomed Sarah Lawrence to Riesenberg Gymnasium for the second time this season.  The Gryphons (12-13, 5-3 Skyline), who beat the Privateers in three sets on Oct. 1, earned another sweep, defeating Maritime (2-14, 1-8 Skyline) by a 25-13, 25-20, 25-8 count.

Sarah Lawrence jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set and eventually extended that advantage to 16-5.  The Privateers rallied for five of the next six points to make it 17-10, but the Gryphons closed the set on an 8-3 run to earn a 25-13 win.

After Sarah Lawrence opened up a 9-3 cushion in the second set, Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) smashed a kill to spark a 5-1 run that brought Maritime within two, 10-8.  The Gryphons scored the next four points to regain a six-point edge, 14-8, but the Privateers responded with eight of the next 10 to tie the score at 16-16.  Sarah Lawrence countered with a 7-2 spurt, though, and the Gryphons captured the set by a 25-20 margin.  The Gryphons then easily took the third set, 25-6, to close out the straight-sets victory.

Custodio and Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) paced the Privateers with eight kills apiece, and Mele also recorded eight digs.  Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) tallied eight digs of her own, while Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) had six digs to go along with 14 assists.  As a team, Maritime hit .080 (22 kills, 15 errors, 87 attempts) in the match.

For Sarah Lawrence, Kaille Ferguson led the way with 11 kills.  She added seven digs and four assists.  Athena Kazos finished with eight kills, six digs and six service aces, while Mia Rector registered 25 assists, nine digs and five aces.  Skyler Kawecki-Muonio posted seven kills and five aces to go along with a match-high 16 digs.  The Gryphons hit .278 (36-11-90) as a team and outdug the Privateers 44-37.

Maritime will be in action again on Saturday at the William Paterson tri-match.  The Privateers will face Brooklyn (13-11) for the second time this season at 1 p.m., then meets the host Pioneers (9-15) at 3 p.m.
