Maritime Stumbles Against Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team resumed its Skyline Conference by visiting Old Westbury on Thursday night.  In their first road match against Old Westbury since 2015, the Privateers (2-10, 1-5 Skyline) fell to the Panthers (5-6, 3-3 Skyline) by a 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 count at Farmingdale's Nold Hall.

There were seven ties early in the first set.  It was 11-11 when Old Wetbury went on a 9-4 run to take a 20-15 lead.  The Privateers scored three of the next four points to get back within three at 21-18 before the Panthers won four of the next five to close out the set, 25-19.

After the Panthers opened up a 9-5 cushion in the second set, Maritime rattled off three straight points to make it 9-8.  Old Westbury responded with three points of its own to regain a four-point advantage, 12-8.  The Panthers took the set by a score of 25-18 to go up 2-0 in the match.

Old Westbury scored the first four points of the third set and eventually extended that advantage to 8-2.  Maritime got back within 13-10, but the Panthers responded with an 8-2 spurt to increase the margin to 21-12.  Old Westbury closed out the set, 25-14, to finish off the sweep.

Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) had seven kills and seven digs for the Privateers.  Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) registered 13 assists to go along with six digs, while Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) added six digs of her own.

For the Panthers, Clarissa Olivero led the way with seven kills and five blocks.  Stephanie Maser tallied seven kills and three service aces, and Olivia Baumann recorded six kills and 10 digs.  Rachelle Marrero, meanwhile, posted a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs.  Old Westbury outdug Maritime 35-28 and hit .167 (30 kills, 17 errors, 78 attempts) as a team.

On Saturday, the Privateers return home for a non-conference matchup with FDU-Florham (7-9).  The contest gets underway at 1 p.m. at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
