NEWBURGH, NY – After playing four straight at home, the Maritime College women's soccer team hit the road for the first time in nearly three weeks on Saturday. The Privateers (3-5-0, 2-2-0 Skyline) traveled to Mount St. Mary for a Skyline Conference game, but were unable to come away with the win, falling to the Knights (3-7-2, 3-1-1 Skyline) by a 9-1 count at Kaplan Field.
Mount St. Mary opened the scoring in the 10
th minute, then made it 2-0 with a penalty kick goal in the 29
th minute. The Knights added a pair of tallies in the final five minutes of the half to increase their advantage to 4-0.
In the 49
th minute, Maritime earned a penalty kick when Mount St. Mary was whistled for a foul in the box.
Kathryn Sandford (Floral Park, NY) stepped up to the spot and drilled it home, cutting the Privateers' deficit to 4-1. However, the Knights responded less than a minute later before notching four more tallies to earn a 9-1 victory.
Sandford's goal was her sixth of the season, tying her with
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) for the team lead. Goalkeeper
Emily Commodore (Tinton Falls, NJ) (1-2-0) faced 28 Mount St. Mary shots and made five saves.
Shannon McGowan had two goals and two assists for the Knights, while Maria Baldwin scored twice and added an assist. Victoria Maffettone and Kaitlin Hansen, meanwhile, each recorded a goal and an assist. Starting goalkeeper Christina Kakavas (2-2-1) earned the win after playing 78 minutes before she was relieved by Marilena Mangiaracina.
On Tuesday, the Privateers return to Reinhart Field for a 7 p.m. matchup with Sarah Lawrence (6-3-1, 3-0-0 Skyline).
