The Maritime College men's soccer team started off the 2021 season with a bang as they defeated John Jay by a score of 2-0. The windy game on Reinhart Field was highlighted by two goals from
Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai), with the second one coming short-handed in the second half.
Dugan's first goal came just fifteen minutes into the game off a cross from
Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City). The Privateers continued to keep up the pressure on offense for the remainder of the half, but eventually the physical play caught up to the Privateers and they got stuck with a red card right before halftime.
Playing down a man for half the game, Maritime did a fantastic job of packing in the defense and keeping the Bloodhounds at bay. Timothy Nichols made two back-to-back leaping saves in the second half to keep the shutout alive as well. Nichols finished the game with five saves.
The Privateers were able to come up with a counter attack with about 20 minutes left to play and a cross in front of the box from
Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) caused havoc. After a couple shots rebounding out, Dugan was able to connect and sneak it past the goalie for his second goal of the game, which solidified the advantage for Maritime.
The Privateers will head to Massachusetts Maritime this weekend for their next contest on Saturday at 2 p.m.
