PURCHASE, NY – The Maritime College women's soccer team opened up a 3-2 lead in its Skyline Conference matchup at Purchase on Saturday. However, the Panthers (1-3-0, 1-2-0 Skyline) scored a pair of goals two minutes apart midway through the second half to earn a 4-3 triumph over the Privateers (3-2-0, 0-2-0 Skyline) at Purchase College Field.
Maritime got on the board first when
Anya Josberger's (Coxsackie, NY) beautifully placed shot found the top right corner of the net in the 11th minute. Rebecca Quick responded with two goals to give Purchase a 2-1 lead, but the Privateers countered in the 24th minute.
Kathryn Sanford (Floral Park, NY) tied the game with a one-timer off a
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) cross.
Ford then took a pass from
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY) and put it home from 18 yards out in the 56th minute to give Maritime back the lead, 3-2. Quick completed her hat trick 10 minutes later to even the score at 3-3 before Rebecca Colgan got free on a breakaway and flicked one past
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY) in the 68th minute. That would prove to be the game-winner, as two Maritime scoring chances in the final minutes were stopped by Purchase goalkeeper Haley Cascio and the Panthers held on for the 4-3 victory.
Cascio (1-3-0) ended up with 12 saves in the win. Quick scored three goals for Panthers, and Colgan had an assist to go along with her game-winner. Kristen Purcell, meanwhile, contributed three assists for Purchase.
Pomaro (3-2-0) recorded five saves for the Privateers. Ford's goal was her third of the season, while Josberger and Sanford each scored for the second time in 2021.
On Wednesday night, the Privateers visit St. Joseph's (LI) (4-3-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) for a 7 p.m. contest.
