WAYNE, NJ – The Maritime College football team wrapped up its non-conference schedule with a contest at William Paterson on Saturday.
David Keogh (Mahopac, NY) finished with 227 passing yards, including an 83-yard touchdown strike to
Kevin Murphy (Seaford, NY), but that would prove to be the Privateers' (0-3) only score in a 28-7 Pioneers victory at Wightman Stadium. William Paterson is now 2-2 on the season.
William Paterson received the opening kickoff and drove 83 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. The Pioneers then made it 14-0 after converting a Maritime fumble into a short field and a 27-yard TD pass from Spencer Lee to Taz Burton. It would remain that way until late in the third quarter, when William Paterson increased its lead to 21 points on Terrique Riddick's 39-yard touchdown run.
After Keogh's 83-yard strike to Murphy midway through the fourth quarter got Maritime on the board, the Privateers attempted an onside kick that was recovered by the Pioneers. William Paterson couldn't take advantage of the short field, however, as Ronald Alvarez missed a field goal with 4:53 remaining.
Maritime marched down the field on the ensuing possession and seemed poised to pull within a touchdown. However, a Keogh pass was intercepted in the end zone and Jojo Kirby returned it 100 yards for the score with 1:48 remaining in the contest, icing the 28-7 William Paterson win.
Keogh went 21-for-51 with one touchdown and one interception, while Murphy made six catches for 124 yards and a TD.
Eric Borchert (Marlboro, NY) had a team-high seven receptions.
Sergio Borda (Toms River, NJ) and
Abdoulay Konate (New York, NY) paced the Maritime defense with six tackles apiece.
For the Pioneers, Lee was 15-for-28 for 215 yards and a touchdown. Riddick gained 102 yards on 16 carries and got into the end zone twice. Matt Clarke led William Paterson with 81 receiving yards, while Burton had five receptions, including the touchdown catch. Jared Salgado made a game-high 11 tackles for the Pioneers.
Next up for the Privateers (0-0 ECFC) is the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) opener against Castleton (2-1, 0-0 ECFC) next Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
