Privateers Fall at Mount St. Vincent In Skyline Opener

RIVERDALE, NY – The Maritime College women's volleyball team opened its Skyline Conference schedule with a matchup at Mount St. Vincent on Wednesday night.  Two days after a thrilling five-set victory over Five Towns, the Privateers (1-3, 0-1 Skyline) were unable to come away with their second straight win, as the Dolphins (6-5, 1-1 Skyline) posted a 25-9, 25-17, 25-15 triumph at the Peter J. Sharp Center.

Mount St. Vincent scored the first nine points of the match en route to an easy 25-9 first set win.  The Privateers bounced back in set two, however, jumping out to a 5-2 advantage.  After Maritime went ahead 12-7, the Dolphins responded with a 10-3 run to take a 17-15 lead.  A Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) kill and a Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) service ace evened the score at 17-17, but Mount St. Vincent rattled off eight straight points to finish off the frame, 25-17.

In the third set, Maritime again raced out to the early lead, 3-0, before the Dolphins rallied to go ahead 5-4.  After the Privateers regained their advantage, 8-6, Mount St. Vincent went on a 5-1 run to open up an 11-9 margin.  Maritime pulled within 12-11, but the Dolphins ended the set on a 13-4 spurt to close out a 25-15 victory that wrapped up a straight-sets triumph.

Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY) had four kills to go along with a pair of aces.  Kirchner distributed 10 assists and Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) paced the Privateers with 11 digs.  Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) collected eight digs, while Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, NY) tallied seven digs.

For the Dolphins, Lindsay DeBoer led the way with eight kills.  Madison Gale handed out 10 kills and added five aces, while Brianna Ayuso added nine assists.  Isabella Garcia had a match-high 23 digs, as Mount St. Vincent outdug Maritime 33-29.

On Saturday, the Privateers will play a pair of matches at Lehman College.  Maritime takes on NJCU (6-0) at 12 p.m. before facing the host Lightning (0-1) at 2 p.m.
