THROGGS NECK, NY – Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored twice and
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) made four saves, as the Maritime College women's soccer team (3-1-0) defeated Saint Elizabeth (0-2-0) by a 3-0 count at Reinhart Field on Monday. It was the Privateers' second shutout victory in as many home games this season.
After an evenly-played first 30 minutes,
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY) and Wright connected for the game's first goal. Wright's initial shot was saved by Saint Elizabeth goalkeeper Keturah Cohen and bounced right to Ford. She then threaded a beautiful pass that Wright put into the lower right corner from five yards out.
Ford set up another Wright tally in the 54
th minute. She found an opening in the Saint Elizabeth defense and found Wright, who tapped it in for her second goal of the day and fifth in her last two games. Barely a minute later, a Maritime corner kick resulted in a Saint Elizabeth own goal that made the score 3-0 in favor of the Privateers.
Maritime outshot Saint Elizabeth 18-6 in the contest, including a 7-1 edge in the second half. Cohen (0-2-0) recorded six saves for the Eagles, while Pomaro (3-1-0) was credited with her second straight shutout.
Wednesday's scheduled home matchup against Medgar Evers was cancelled, so the Privateers will now have nearly a week off before returning to action. The Privateers (0-1-0 Skyline) resume their Skyline Conference slate with a 12 p.m. matchup at Purchase (0-2-0, 0-1-0 Skyline) on Saturday.
