THROGGS NECK, NY – The goals came early and often for the Maritime College women's soccer team in its home opener on Friday.
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored two of the Privateers' six first half goals and added another in the second half, as Maritime (2-1-0) posted an 8-0 victory over Five Towns (0-2-0) at Reinhart Field. The eight goals scored were Maritime's most in a game since an 11-goal output against Yeshiva on Oct. 25, 2019.
After Wright gave Maritime the early lead, the Privateers got a goal from
Anya Josberger (Coxsackie, NY/Coxsackie-Athens) in the 27
th minute before Wright scored again just over a minute later. Maritime added three more tallies in a span of barely three minutes late in the half, with
Kiera Ford (Montgomery, NY),
Annaliese Etienne (Garden City, NY) and
Kathryn Sanford (Floral Park, NY) all finding the back of the net.
Wright completed her first collegiate hat trick in the 66
th minute, when she took a feed from
Autumn-Sky Mandaglio (Colonia, N.J./Millburn) and put it home for the Privateers' seventh goal of the contest. Mandaglio then recorded a goal of her own to complete the scoring.
Maritime finished the game with 33 total shots, 23 of which went on goal, and took 15 corner kicks. Five Towns goalkeeper Sydney Mountain (0-2-0) was credited with five saves in the loss, while
Lizzie Pomaro (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) (2-1-0) earned her first shutout of the season for the Privateers.
On Monday, the Privateers return to action with a 5 p.m. matchup against Saint Elizabeth (0-1-0) at Reinhart Field.
